Why do some atheists act cruelly toward the religions that are peaceful?
I’m not talking about disbelieving, contradicting, criticizing, or debating. That’s great. I’m talking about name-calling, I’m right and you’re wrong, and you’re deluded. I’m talking about how so many atheists automatically say “‘ALL’ religions were made to enslave the mind, control people, etc.” “EVERY” religion says it’s right and all the others are wrong. “EVERY” religion tries to force their beliefs on others. “THEISTS” follow a 2000 year old book. “THEISTS” are deluded and stupid. “THEISTS” deny evolution and science. “THEISTS” poison the minds of their children by forcing them to believe the same thing.
Since most of you are science-minded, you should know that absolutes are rarely true. Have any of you bothered to study EVERY religion in the world before making this brass assertion? Or do you (like Christians) think there is only one religion in the world?
I (theist) have defended atheists against fundie nut-jobs over and over. It ticks me off royally when fundies bait and attack you. Yet you still (many of you) turn right around and attack even the religious people who are completely on your side.
Has it ever occurred to you that there are religions that encourage critical thinking? That there are religions who avoid dogma like the plague? That assert that all religions are equally valid as long as they don’t harm anyone? That severely frown on or even forbid proselytizing? That think it is terrible to force all religious rules into law, including their own? That encourage parents to teach their kids about every religion and decide for themselves?
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe you shouldn’t be rude and insulting to people who work with you and not against you?
It’s fine if you think my religion is bogus. I don’t mind in the slightest. If you want to have a debate of reason, I am always happy to learn new things and adjust my beliefs accordingly. Just don’t be an insulting jerk! If I ask a question about my religion that has nothing to do with persuading other people, and isn’t baiting anyone, and is just there to give me some insight, doesn’t it strike you as a little obnoxious to answer and say nothing except “Your religion is stupid and it isn’t real, so it doesn’t matter!” But I see these answers all the time!
More and more, I see a LOT of atheists acting like fundie Christians!
If there is a theist who is not giving you any trouble whatsoever, maybe you should…. I don’t know? .Show… what’s the phrase… oh, yeah, common decency.
I certainly don’t think ALL do! The love of my life is atheist. Most aren’t like that, but the ones on Y!A usually are.
Laet, you need to read the whole question. I was saying that NOT ALL theists hate people of other religions. The “not all” implies that many are.
Besides, if somebody else does it, that doesn’t make it right.
Many of you are exposing one of my points:
You think there is only one religion in the world! Those of you who do that are just like fundies.
Wow, this is sad. I was hoping to provoke thought and encourage tolerance. Most of you assume I’m Christian, that I follow a holy book, and that because I’m religious I must automatically be against atheists in every way. You also seem to think that atheists are the only groups fundie Christians pick on. News flash: they hate every other religion, too!
You actually believe that all theists are the same, don’t you? Wow this is sad.
Most of you guys are just as bad as fundie Christians! *sigh* I guess my request for common decency fell on deaf, ignorant ears.

Ok, For the last freakin time, you Christians do the same thing. I’ve been getting hate emails from a so called Christan. My child was called a demon spawn, my father was called satan. I was called a self centered bitch. So before you ask this question, be sure you know what you are talking about. And I am not rude to anyone who is not rude to me. I know plenty of Christians, and have actually received some nice emails from some, I have nothing wrong with them. Its the ones who attack me for being who I am that I have a problem with.

No… not really.
Christian kids don’t get picked on at school for being Christian. Atheist kids do.
Hells, you know what? I was one of those little bastards picking on people with contradicting beliefs when I was a young Christian.

Here we go again. I don’t know why. But I can’t think of a single time I’ve ever seen anyone say anything bad about the really nice religions like the Quakers and Buddhists. Mostly, they say stuff about fundies of all religions because the fundies won’t leave people in peace.

Some atheists think they are superior and that their beliefs are superior. And usually they are ignorant of other beliefs or just want to attack others’ beliefs for no real reason.
Well, you can never generalize… I try not to attack other people’s beliefs, unless they’re attacking mine. R & S is one of the more hostile forums..you’ve just got to get used to it.

Christianity and Islam both have books, ideas, and followers more evil then anything Hitler had done.
Once the killing and fear mongering has stopped… We might just be able to tell the difference between the Theists that support hate and ignorance and those that don’t.
But until you drop the holy texts full of evil… It is hard to distinguish between someone that loves everyone and a theist that is going to start ranting about hell or become a suicide bomber.
If you are REALLY this upset at being lumped together, then it means you need to start to excise the cancer from within your own belief system.

In a nutshell, a friend sent this to me a few weeks ago. It should answer your question wholly.
ATHEISTS, BULLIES, NON-BELIEVERS and RIDICULERS
————————
Never be bullied nor ever feel inferior to an atheist. Try to always put God first in whatever you do in life and that includes being in the face of those who hate him and his son.
They should not scare you and you do not have to go down to their level. You can smile when they behave this way because you know what God’s word, the Bible says about ridiculers:
Ridiculers are, in general, detestable to others. (Proverbs 24:9) If such do not accept reproof, they will experience disaster. (Proverbs 1:22-27) And how despicable are those who deride the poor, or their own parents. (Proverbs 17:5; 30:17) Ridiculers often refuse to listen to rebuke (Proverbs 13:1) and do not love those reproving them. (Proverbs 9:7, 8; 15:12) Nevertheless, they should be disciplined for the benefit of others. (Proverbs 9:12; 19:25, 29; 21:11) Instead of keeping company with such unholy ones, it is better to drive them away; much happier are those who refuse to sit with ungodly ridiculers. (Psalms 1:1; Proverbs 22:10)
“For you know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires.” (2 Peter 3:3) Jude says that the desires of these ridiculers are “for ungodly things.” He calls them “animalistic men, not having spirituality.” (Jude 17-19)
You can and should rejoice in the face of ridiculers because you know you are doing God’s will and it was prophesied that these lowly ones would come out of the smallest of rocks to try to offend God and you, yet you stand strong. Rejoice in the face of ridiculers, and leave them alone.
They are not worth your time.
——————–
They’ll deny it but the truth is too obvious. Hope this has been helpful.
God Bless
Atheist.

Thanks for the thorough tongue-lashing. Not all Christians are decent. If the question is polite, I will answer politely. But if it is trying to promote ill will or superiority, I’ll answer in kind. You get what you give in this world. Religion doesn’t deserve respect. It must earn it. So what is the point of this question anyway?

What has caused you to become so bitter. BTW, how could you be on the side of atheists if you are into religion; that is how I understood your rambling. Yes, I have studied every known religion, some for more than 10 years and others for several years. All at the same time mostly. I have traveled just about everywhere and I speak more than one language. I have seen the hate of religionists and how they have destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who do not want any religion or at least do not want a new religion. You can say what you wish, but religion is not a good thing and not just.

I just wish it were true. Unfortunately most religions frown upon critical thinking. This latest presidential election that hinged for hundreds of thousands on outlawing abortion is a great example of why so many people, not just atheists, have a problem with Christians. Fine, you’ve got your rules and mores, I like and live by most of them in fact, but I don’t see why your rules must be forced into pointless law. Yes, outlawing early term abortion is pointless law.
I know there are three major religions in the world but they all follow a pretty similar mantra when you boil it down to the essentials.

wow, here we are again, new package, same product.
we have been over this.
is it reasonable to assume that all apples come from apple trees?
why, because we have seen NO apples that have not come from trees.
same with religion, some may say that they accept other religions, but infact, as the very nature of religion, must and does specificly “explain” it better, infering that it is the correct religion.
also, your reference that we are acting like fundie christians is getting annoying.
if we were we would offer no beter explainations then they do.
you mistake whinking im right with knowing.
if i know i am right then i am lying.
no one has ever stated that ANY religion is absolutly false.
however we can come to this conclusion basedon the logical contradictory nature of religion itself.
some say others are wrong and need to be drestroyed
some say others oare wrong but still acceptable
but they ALL say by inference that they are right.
i dont need to study and memorize all religious texts to know this.
this is how religion operates.
if you study a text assuming that it is both real and correct without evidence for what you believe, then you are following it like a religion.
now, admitidaly there are among us atheists that follow certain principles that seem a little religious but most of those theorys can be backed up by their math.
of which we have had no failure with before so i see no need to doubt math now.
but none the less, still religious.
so understand, the difference is indeed minimal, but signifigant.
we will always request to be proven wrong, in fact it is my personal test
to prove myself wrong about something every day.
this is why you may precive that we sound like fundies, but with a little depth you can see that they could not be farther from eachother.
face it, atheist and theist views are conflicting and have far reaching implctions for EVERYTHING, from the personal level to the rest of society.
they are conflicting and important, and in the race to find reality, there is no time for politleness, as peoples lives and possibly souls depend on the war ending as fast as possible.

Emily, this is a totally EXCELLENT question! I too, have noticed that and to stand up for many of them, many don’t even realize that they ARE generalizing when they say such things. Many DO, in fact, understand that NOT ALL are just blindly following their “dogma”, and that there ARE indeed a huge number of Christians, Jews, and Muslims out there who think and act the way you do, and are accepting of the idea that ALL forms of spirituality ARE indeed the same at their base level, even Atheism has its own form of spirituality. Too many times, those folks (the Atheists) have been mistreated by the members of the mainstream Religions and they simply assume that ALL are out to attack them for their non-belief. It is posts like yours that helps them become aware that there are MANY who do NOT feel the same way as the rest of the hardcore mainstreamers. There’s another person on here named Pangel, who is a very nice person and a theist and yet is very much loved by everyone because she too is very much like you in the respect that she is very accepting of folks from all systems of spirituality. You two seem to be very much alike. Pangel has had her accounts removed many times for insisting on hugging everyone and promoting love and peace among all. I haven’t seen any of her posts in quite some time, perhaps she has a new account and failed to re-add me as one of her contacts. No matter, my feelings aren’t hurt by it, I know who and what she is and I love her for being who she is, anyway. The thing is, Emily, there are a lot of folks who simply post to make a noise, many of them are lonely and ineffective people in real life and this is their only outlet for the inner turmoil which goes on in their heads. MOST of us know who they are and either reach out to them or just ignore them and avoid the confrontations. YOU too can make either choice, OR you can let all of that get to you and over time, it will change you and make YOU bitter and vengeful like them. This post is sort of letting them know that this kind of stuff gets to you and some of the responses are unkind on purpose. those folks, like I said before, have very little power in their real lives and so this is the only way that they can give themselves the illusion of power over others. As long as YOU give them the power to hurt you, then they will keep on doing so. YOU and ONLY you have the power to NOT allow them to have such power over you. I think that you already KNOW what I mean but you just needed the reassurance that it was so.
Your a sweet and wonderful person, Emily. Don’t let THEM continue to have the power to make any kind of unwelcome changes on YOU.
Brightest Blessings,
Raji the Green Witch

The only religion I know of that’s in any way peaceful is Buddhism. History is littered with the crimes and atrocities of the religions. So how have you come to the conclusion that they are in any way peaceful. More misery has been dished out by the religious than for every other cause put together.
Theists have a million miles to go before they can equal the evil committed in the name of god. So where are you coming from.
