What is the best mouse control for a seasonal home?

We are getting ready to close up our seasonal cottage in Ohio. The mice move in over the winter and get into the furniture and chew/leave droppings/build nests. I just bought two sleeper sofas and don’t want them in there. Do moth balls help? The poison in the boxes is not working-they just scatter it everywhere and we have a ferret we are afraid will find it next summer. Any ideas or anyone else have this problem? We had the place sprayed for carpenter ants in the summer. Will this deter the mice? Thanks for your suggestions!

You need to hire a professional. Nothing over the counter works as good as what the pros use.

Hire an exterminator. Make sure to tell him/her that you have a small pet that will be there in the summer, this may factor into their choice of chemicals to apply.
Alternatively, you could take in a cat and hope there are enough mice to feed it for the winter.

There is not much you can do without having someone actually go into the house once per week. However putting a lot of month balls in every room will help deter them. Good luck.
