What can I do to discourage carpenter bees ?

I have a wooden deck with a wooden stair case leading to the deck outside my back door. Bees are literally drilling and leaving a mound of saw dust bigger than an ant hill. They are drilling up under the step making perfect holes about the size of a nickel, and the dust is proving this – on the step below the holes. Can they be stopped ??

yes they can be stopped by putting plastic ;alum; or fiberglass sheeting over the wood which ever you get the easy est for the wood will have to be totally covered and this will stop them;one more thing they have a plastic paint that might work for i never tried it for the kind of job.
