termites or ants?

I’ve noticed little black ants going into the foundation of my house a couple of years ago. Called the pest control people and they came periodically for a couple of years. We stopped the service last year. Now I’ve noticed a basement door jamb eaten away in tunnels(not mud tunnels). In the basement I’ve noticed very fine grannuals of sawdust in cobwebs near foundation and outer walls. Do I have termites or ants?

small and black does not describe any termite or carpenter ant i have seen…. they are usually large and light to dark brown. chances are you are not seeing the correct insect responsible for the damages you have described…
could also be powder post beetles…more than likely inactive…dig around in the damaged areas to uncover any insect activity…then determine best way to get rid of them!! good luck

could be a combination of both or even a wood boring beetle…as subteranean termites eat they will replace the wood with a mud but on a location like a door jam it easily breaks down. They will eat spring growth of the wood leaving the darker grains of the wood left standing that can give a tunnel appearance at times…. ants will leave a loose material that builds up on the floor or gets caught in cobwebs, but it doesn’t mean carpenter ants. There are several species that leave frass like that, the smaller the frass particles the smaller the ant species that made it. Most boring beetle residue will be a real fine, flour like consistency and there “tunnels” they create in the wood are pretty much true tunnels through the wood
