Shooting 3 in slugs?

When shooting 3in slugs how much would barrel length affect the accuracy and velocity? I’m talkin’ 18.5in barrel vs 23+ inches.

Buy a slug barrel for your gun.

Having a longer barrel will affect your gun tn two ways. One you will get maybe an extra 300fps depending on your gun. Second you will get at least a full 1″ closer grouping with a longer barrel.

I personally would go with a longer barrel cuz the accuracy is higher when you have more twist on the slug…

It takes 22 inches of barrel to fully burn the powder and achieve full power. If you’re shooting bird shot, or buck shot with this size barrel, you’ll get full force, but will need a choke tube to get decent groupings. If you’re going to be shooting slugs, you need a rifled barrel. Between the rifling in the barrel and the rifled slug, you will be able to hit a deer at 50 yards max. The shortest I’d personally go would be 26 inches. This is still much easier to manuver than a 30 inch and you can reach those long shots of 75 to 100 yards. Unless you’re in law enforcement, the 18.5 inch barrel will be a waste of money. Cops buy guns according to statistics which say that 75% of lethal encounters happen within 6 feet. The other 25% are divided up to encounters ranging out to 15-20 feet. Beyond that, it’s minuscule. For strictly home defense, an 18.5″ would work. For any kind of hunting, or simply for versatility, get a gun with more than 23 inches. You’ll be happy you did.

It will affect it but you would likely only see the difference when target shooting, not in the feild. A responsible hunter usually wouldn’t take a shot with a slug at anything over 50 yards. And at that range the difference is very small even with a 5″ or more difference in length. At the longer end of the spectrum the diiference will be much greater at a 100 yards I would suspect a 10 shot group of slugs from an 18″ barrel to look like a 50 yard buckshot pattern.
Most Mossberg factory barrels are 24″ for 12 guage, 18.5 ” is a SHORT barrel and if using for home defense should fair fine.
