PERMACULTURE as a Sub-Category under Environment?
please Yahoo can we have PERMACULTURE & SUSTAINABILITY as additional sub category under Environment
Permaculture means permanent agriculture ,
a concept formulated in the 60ties by Bill Mollison ,
And it entails alternative strategies for a Nation,
Soil conservation,
Waterharvesting,Aquaculture,
Dryland strategies,Precipitacion,
Mulching & Composting,Organic pest control,
Environmental design in Architecture as well as Earthworks,
Alternative energies(i.e bio-degraders),
Bio-diversity & companion planting (guilds),
agro-forestal and much more it cover all climatic conditions .

there is a university of Permaculture in Australia.
The permaculture crowd is very large and all over the world
and are privy to a wealth of information concerning the Environment.

I think it sounds like a good idea to have a separate section for permaculture answers.
How can we get one there?

Urgent: Please act today then forward this email to other Permaculture supporters.
There is an increasing interest in Permaculture but we still need to raise awareness. Many people get their information on green issues from search engines and sites like Yahoo Answers.
However, there is no sub section on Permaculture, despite past efforts for there to be one put on. This means that questions that could be answered using Permaculture solutions are spread over all of the other categories
Also anybody interested in Permaculture has little chance of getting a Permaculture solution to their question. They are more likely to get a ‘Does Global Warming Really Exist’ answer to any question posed.
The question has been raised yet again. Please act now to register your support for Permaculture. The answers are only open for a few days then remain on as answers each time the question is asked. If we all work together we can get so much more support for Permaculture and all the green questions that are being asked today. It will only take a few minutes of your time.
The question is by byderule: Permaculture as a sub category under Environment?

That’s a great idea… it sets the concept apart so that people can get a better understanding.
Oh BTW.. I couldn’t find it listed under agriculture.. either I am dislexic tonight or the respondent immediately below me is being cynical.
Anyway.. its about more than “agriculture” it involves an attitude to living sybiotically with your immediate surroundings… it is small scale “solve the problems in your backyard first” kind of environmental management which people can attack without having to “save the planet” .. but there is a real opportunity of that outcome just by saving their tiny insignificant little patch of it… if we all do this.. imagine for a minute what 4 billion people can do for this earth.

There is a Permaculture sub-category already, did you know? It’s at Science >> Agriculture >> Permaculture.

Definitely!
People need to be made aware that there is more to the environmental movement than watching Inconvenient Truth and switching to CF bulbs. The entire environmental section has turned into a partisan battlefield over global warming… and all this does is slow the spread of knowledge in other areas.

Interesting idea but where do you stop. There are thousands of possible topics.
Biotech
biomimicry
CO2 sequestering
terran vs marine biology
geopaleontology
water cycle/nutrition cycle/energy cycle
etcetcetcetc
I know permaculture is a favorite topic of yours, but it is only one of many topics under the environment umbrella. Remember, your “intellectual customer” probably doesn’t know enough about the topic to even look for a specific category; and if they do, they probably know enough to do the research themselves from accredited sources.
lmao @ belladonna. Okay, okay … but if he gets his permaculture subcategory I want all of my categories, too!
*going now to think up some new categories*

Yes I will. I am only 14 and don’t understand why we don’t have it already ?
EDIT:
I have looked for permaculture in the agriculture section. It is not there. How could someone else find out what permaculture is if i couldn’t?

I would support it, but I wonder how many of our visitors to Answers actually know what it is?
One Answer has suggested that there is a section devoted to this already. If so, we need to bring it to more prominence because I’ve visted Answers often and havn’t seen it.
As oil depeletion bites, there is the idea floating around that bio-fuels are the answer to all our liquid transport fuel woes. WRONG. We have trouble feeding the world’s population as it is, without putting strain on the environment by trying to grow food AND fuel. If we use all the corn, grain and sugar to make bio-deisel, what are we going to eat?
The price of corn has already doubled. Very little corn is actually eaten directly by humans, but it is eaten as animal feed and so we consume it in the form of milk, butter, eggs, yoghurt, ice-cream, cheese, chicken and beef. The price rises mean we will all be paying more for food. With the price doubling, it effectivly means food aid budgets have halved.
Sugar cane harvests are being rediredted to make ethanol, and so the price of sugar, and everything made from it, will rise. Without oil based fertilisers and pesticides, large tracts of what is now farmland will not be fertile enough to grow crops, puttng on even more pressure.
I see our whole nation digging up flowerbeds to grow their own veg, and being alot more interested in the soil and how it works.
Good luck in the campaign.

Give Permaculture the sub category it deserves. This is what we have all been waiting for.
And Grizz what we need is to Integrate and share the knowledge that we all ready have. Nature has some of the solutions to problems that concern us all. Permaculture supports diversity.
We need multiagency and multidisciplinary approaches. The problem with a specialism is that you do not know HOW TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS in other areas. Lets share our knowledge. A car manufacturer, a dentist, a computer expert a physics teacher, a social worker or a geologist may have the very answers people are looking for.
How do we know unless we ask? Permaculture shares knowledge. Permaculture ethics are Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares. Who can argue with that?
And Grizz, I am sure you can argue with that, but you should support this new section because think of all the fun you will have arguing your point.
Permaculture is a moral and ethical design system. By considered observation of nature and natural systems Permaculture practitioners recognize and use patterns and natural principles to design sustainable solutions to every day problems. Permaculture may not be defined as one discipline. It is the connecting system between disciplines. It is a whole systems approach to living. The whole is greater than it’s sum of parts so diversity is key. Permaculture ethics of Earthcare, Fair Shares and People Care support and rely on reciprocity.
It is not, as many suggest, just a system of agriculture. In fact Mollison argues:
‘Modern agriculture is not a system for producing food but producing money. In sustaining this wealth modern agriculture pays no respect to the resources it is based on. No one yet pays for the damage at the end of the chain. Society is caught up in this system of destruction instead of all that you can grow a garden in a few weeks that will provide you with timber and vegetables all your life. And it seems to be much more sane and responsible and people should be trained to put in those few weeks of work’. Mollinson: The Permaculture concept part 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye90FxJmuw0&mode=related&search=
Permaculture demonstrates that all relationships are reciprocal. We can use Systems Theory from Social work (Meyer, 1983:29-30). This approach recognizes the interrelatedness of people and their environments. It seeks a balanced approach for best, not perfect, fit. Systems theory demonstrates the relationship between the person, the family, community along with the social, economic and political environment that people are also part of.
Systems Theory states that a person functions as part of many systems and that each of these systems are equally affected by the system itself and equally it itself effects the system. A change in one part of the system has consequences for other systems or parts of that system. The core aims of all systems is to seek balance and attain goals. Problems occur when there is a poor fit between the person and the systems which they are part of.

I certainly support establishing “Permaculture and Sustainability” as a sub-category under “Environment”. The sub-area “Green Living” covers the topic of how people can make individual lifestyle choices to help the environment. We can also use a sub-area that covers the science & practice of sustainable systems, which may include organic farming, aquaculture, and permaculture.

definitly a permaculture sub-group
and remove “global warming” which just seems to get dim-wits with no environmental awareness shouting that it’s not happening.
I am a permaculture designer and didn’t know there was a section under agriculture. Permaculture is much wider than that.

Green Living encompasses permaculture, sustainable live styles, and other areas as well. Information can be offered through asking permaculture related questions periodically — something I’ve done — and providing answers to questions and providing a thumbnail sketch of what sustainability means and how that lifestyle can be achieved.
As it is some Environment categories don’t get a lot of good questions posted, and I don’t think we should dilute the categories by adding another.

Hi, permaculture should be course of study in every country, on the university level. If we don’t have sustainable farming instead of more housing developments and overgrazing and sterile pulpwood “forests”, maybe terraforming Mars wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Humans have to have something to bank on, when the —hits the fan.
I guess permafarming is a subheading already. Do you want to make it more prominent? Good idea.

I think that is a great idea but I wonder how many would actually use it! People today have adapted to doing things the “modern” way and taking shortcuts no matter what kind of impact it has on the environment, land, people, animals or whatever…I am learning in my environmental science class many things that I never thought that I was even doing that is harmful!!! It is such an eye opener. I wish that some things were mandated so that people could see the importance of preserving.
