One way trip for astronuts.?
Why are we so concerned with safely returning peope back from space? Why can’t NASA place an ad in the paper and say “volunteers wanted.one way trip to the stars.” No coming back for them. Could you image all the people that would volutnteer. And then they could fly past planets and do what ever astronauts have to do, or they dont need to anything but push pre programmed buttons.
Have one volunteer give him alot of beef jerky and soda and a bunch of dvd movies, send him on a one way trip to the stars and he reports all his findings.
Oh and give him sleeping pills so when hehas to travel from one planet to another and it takes 10 months, he can sleep those ten months.

Would you volunteer for this?
Really?
Why?

nasa is funded by taxes
nasa’s maintaining its funding means maitaining a good image
a single accidental death is unacceptable to tax payers and legislatures (even though space travel is an incredibly difficult and risky business)
most people at nasa believe that a single intentional death would end nasa as we know it

I think you’re right, there would be plenty of volunteers. Actually what your proposing is not too far off from something being cooked up right now, called the “Mars Citizenship Program.” Basically it would be a privately funded mission to Mars with one-way volunteer colonists setting up the first permanent outpost.
Check out an article on it here…

The pioneers and vikings have been doing it for years sailing to the west with no idea what they would find, time for some new pioneers.

Why do we worry about astronauts coming back safely to Earth? Because we want to come back to our home because even after that space adventure, we’ll start getting homesick. Also, you need lots of training to survive that trip, and you just can’t say “We need volunteers for this very important space trip. And by the way, you’re going to be living in that rocket for the rest of your life.” That wouldn’t exactly work.
And haven’t you ever heard of ‘freeze-dried food?’ DVDs wouldn’t work because you have to report everything that happens out in space. Not everyone likes beef jerky, and you have to freeze dry it.
Do you know how much it costs to send a soda to outer space? About $10,000,000. I know a lot. That’s because soda bubbles in outer space, kind of like your blood will if you don’t wear a space suit.
I think NASA wants people to come back from space trips to study the people so they could make more efficient crafts so one day we could leave Earth forever and to send the astronauts back home to tell their families the news first-hand.
And I have a question for you, do you read about outer space?
