My horse got kicked, what can I do to help heal it?
So I was riding him and we were walking along on the rail when this mare who is non-horse friendly kicked him while passing, I guess her rider passed her too close to us which makes me really mad b/c you know how it is when your horse gets hurt, i’m really ticked off. He was being such a good boy and I love him so much i hate to see him get hurt. http://www.horse-diseases.com/horseanatomy.html He got kicked a few inches above his stifle. That website has a good picture of the stifle area. He was limping and when I took him inside the barn, he was limping less. I think the hoof grazed him and pushed his stifle area not too harshly because it just like peeled off skin. I had a lot of adult boarders who helped me. I cold hosed it for a half an hour.( i knew to do that) and I put salve on it. Today it was swelled. This is normal right? I put more salve on it. Anything else I can do? It didn’t need stitches really, but tomorrow if it’s worse do you think we should call the vet? Has anything like this happened to you? What did you do to help. I’ve been grooming him a lot and giving him treats and just sitting with him in his stall. I also walked him around for 5 minutes to stretch. Am I doing everything right? Thanks for your help. I’m really worried. Could you pray for him? I love him to death…Last night (the day it happened) I slept with the first horseshoe I ever found of his. I really want him to be ok!

You could put Zinc, Blue Coat, Wound Healing for horses and dogs
And don’t be bothered to much by it. Your horse will be okay. Zinc works really well, you can find it at drug stores, it’s for babies diaper rash but it works amazingly!

He will be ok, its probably just the bruise from the kick that is hurting not the cut. I would just keep hosing it twice a day to bring down the swelling.

From your description I wouldn’t panic over this. Give him some Bute to reduce swelling and try to get him out to walk, turn him in a small paddock if possible. Its just like if you get hurt how when you sit idle things get tight. Salve and cold hosing should help along with some bute. But as always, its always good to get your vets advice if you are not absolutely positive of the degree of the injury.

See how he is tomorrow. If his limping has gotten worse, I would call the vet. It sounds like it is far enough above the joint that it is more of a soft tissue bruise, which can be pretty painful and cause a lot of swelling, but heals just fine. If you have any reason to suspect that the stifle joint was hit, I’d call the vet and not take chances. It sounds like you’ve done things right so far. Keep us posted.
P.S. I never advise giving bute without advice to do so from a vet.

I would just keep hosing it with very cold water twice a day or three if you can, which cold water. He will probably be fine in a few days. I just moved to college and I’m boarding my show horse here. He got kicked by another horse the first day in this same spot. Bute will probably be fine to give him. But just be sure to give him the rite amount for his weight. This will not hurt him or could make him feel a lot better. Also walk him around and let him graze when you can. This will give him the incentive to want to walk it out. Good luck and I hope he gets better. I know how it feels to worry. They are like our children.
