is this letter ok to give to the neibors?
i possted a question about an hour ago that read
our neighbors open their door during the day and just let the dogs come and go as they please. Im homeschool. so my assignments include taking the dogs( A catahula and a chocolate lab) on a run with my bike. they LOVE IT! but since the neighbors leave their door open and let the dogs have free reign on their yard, i cant even go up the road with any animal, which infuriates me, because they arent the only ones who have animals in the neiborhood. and i would turn them in to the authorities if its illegal, because ive dealt with this for far too long. plus, they arent taken care of as they should. they have mange, which is a hazard to all pets in the neiborhood.
i am too soft, so i couldnt make myself report them. so i wrote a letter to gove to them which says
I have an issue that I wish to be resolved. You leave your door open, which lets the dogs have free reign of the yard. As your neighbor, it is not fair that I am unable to walk my dog up and down our road due to your dogs charging at us. I don’t like dog fights, and I want to prevent it. SO I am writing this so you wont get your babies taken away. There is a law in highlands county that states that all dogs have to be either behind a fence or on a leash. Clearly, you are breaking that law, and as a dog owner myself, it would be heartbreaking if my babies got taken away, but if it will help prevent hurt for yours and other dogs, I will report you to the animal control and police department. So please do something about this soon. I want to prevent any harm, and if that means calling animal control, then I will. Plus, id get your dogs checked for fleas or mange, both a hazard to other dogs. I am just giving you a chance to change the situation so that I can walk the dogs up and down the road without your white dog or Pomeranians charging at us.
is this ok?

Why take the chicken shit way out? Why not just talk to your neighbors, face to face?

i say yes. you are giving them the chance to redeem themselves before the law gets involved, and in certain areas, one mistake and you cant have any pets whatsoever in that area anymore, of any kind. you understand the love of having a pet, and rather than being incosiderate, you give them the chance because you care. and if a letter doesnt work, talk to them face-to-face. if that dont work, get the authorities involved.

I think it sounds like you’re trying to threaten them and they may get very defensive. Instead, just talk to them casually. Face-to-face. It doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal. Just something as simple as “Hi. I’m so-and-so, your neighbor from next door. I just wanted to come and talk to you about your dogs. They’ve been charging at my dogs when we walk past and I’m afraid someone is going to get hurt. An innocent passer-by, another pet or even your dogs. I’d really hate for that to happen. I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but Highland County has a law that states all dogs must be fenced or on a leash while outside the home. If you’d like, I’d be more than happy to help you put up a fence one weekend so that all the animals and neighbors can be safe and in accordance with the law.” Then leave it at that. If they get huffy and say they can do whatever they want, then just smile and walk away. When it happens again, feel free to call and report them. They may thank you for the information and erect a fence immediately though. Who knows?

i’m assuming by when you say homeschool you are living at home with your parents. you should get them to deal with it. if you area has a leash law and you neighbors don’t abide by it they are breaking the law.

The only problem I see with it is that if something happened to their dogs, you’d be the first to get blamed.
I would just report it, its anonymous, and normally people are given a chance to rectify the situation before animals are taken, unless the animal is in dire need.

I think your letter is very good. However if the dogs do have mange I would still call Animal control just on that issue. Poor dogs.

If your neighbors are like as you say… and you send them a letter like this (and that’s not saying you are wrong) would you like me to tell you where they will tell you to put the letter. (If you don’t understand, bend over) Now your choice but I wouldn’t as you may end up with more problems. May not work but best to try and talking to them face to face.

What do your parents think about it? If it was me I’d try talking to the neighbors first & ask them nicely to follow the law & contain their dogs. Tell them why it is such a problem for you & give them a chance to resolve the issue. Then if they don’t fix it, report them to Animal Control. I’m not sure threatening to call Animal Control or the cops is necessarily going to get their best co-operation. And mentioning the mange & such is really just inflammatory. Maybe you & your parents could go & talk to the neighbors first. Neighbor relationships can be tough. Remember whatever happens you have to live next to this person. Things can get worse. Sometimes it’s best to try & catch the bees with honey. Save the insect repellent (Animal Control) as a last resort.

Hello,
Wow that sounds like your neighbors really do not care where there dogs go. If i were you i would call animal control on those people. I really do not blame you for writing your letter to them. Every one should be able to walk there dogs up and down the street with out being charged at. That sounds like those dogs could end up biting some one or getting into a fight. If i were you i would call animal control right away on those people. You know they are putting your life in danger as well as other folks dogs too as well as your other neighbors dogs. If your county has a law then they should go by that law. Just be careful with your dogs as well as your own self. I would have reported those people long time ago. Those people have a serious problem and it sounds like they are not going to resolve that problem. So it is a good thing that you spoke up because some folks just ignore that situation. Like i said you have to make that decision for those people and there dogs too, so go ahead and call animal control. That would be a better solution for every one on your block. You are doing the right thing and do not feel guilty because you know those people are doing the wrong thing. Some people are not responsible enough to have dogs. Wow that is such a shame. I hope every thing turns out for the better. Oh you are more responsible for doing some thing about that problem. I give you a big thumbs up for your bravery!! We need more peole like your self in this world to do the right thing for the animals.

Well…that really is a problem! Your poor doggies. Would you mind if I revised your note?
Before you adress this issue in your message, or the issue of the dogs having mange/illness, or the worry of the dogs being violent, make sure you know for sure what the dogs are really like. Do they growl and bark maliciously when you pass the yard, or are they just normally barking at your dogs playfully?
Because you want to be as polite as possible on the first go-round (if they don’t do anything about it, you can get angrier). I wouldn’t accuse them of ‘breaking the law’, or tell them that their babies will be taken away. If you read that, you wouldn’t take it seriously, would you?
Okay, so here’s what I came up with:
Hello,
I’m writing to address a complaint I have with the way you care for your dogs. We don’t appreciate that you leave your door open, giving your dogs free reign in the yard. I understand that all dogs need exercise and fresh air, but as your neighbor, it is not fair that I am unable to walk my dogs up the street.
I would like to prevent any violence between our pets, before something happens where one of us must have our babies taken away.
I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but there is a law in Highlands County stating that when dogs are let outside unsupervised, they must be kept either behind a fence, or on a leash. Since yours are left to roam, children and the other neighborhood pets are left in distress, as well as your dogs themselves, who risk being hit by a car, attacked by a homeowner less patient with them than I am, or being hurt by a wild animal.
If your dog were to bite or attack another animal, let alone a child, the law would indeed require it to be humanely euthanized. As a dog owner myself, it would be heartbreaking if my babies got taken away, but if you do not act on this matter, I will be making the legal authorities aware of the situation. Please do something soon. I want to prevent any harm to your dogs and mine, and if that means that I do need to call animal control, then it will be done.
On a side note, and I could be wrong, but I also suspect that one or all of your dogs might have mange or fleas. Both of those are a health hazard to yours, and other dogs. I’m sure they would appreciate if you had them checked out and treated for this by the veteranarian.
I thought I would contact you first before alerting authorities in hopes that this matter can be resolved. so that I can walk my own dogs on our street without the risk of unwanted attention or aggression from your dogs.
Thank you for reading this. Feel free to contact me at (put your phone number here, it will show them that you mean business, and they’ll be more likely to take you seriously).
Sincerely,
(Your name)
I hope you like this, and it’s helpful! I watch way too much ‘Animal Cops’ on the Animal Planet, haha.
Good luck!
