Is there any hope for this house’s roach problem?
I have lived in a house for almost 7 years now. It is an old house. I belong to a group called Freecycle where you can pick up someone’s unwanted stuff. A few months ago I got a tv and boxes of misc. items and made the mistake of bringing them immediately into the house. I saw as I was looking through a box that there was a roach inside and it got away from me before I could kill it. I took everything back out but ever since then I have been seeing roaches and they have spread bad and fast! From the size of ants to large roaches and a few different kinds. I am seeing many during the day and tons at night . There are cracks all over this house where they hide and it is a 3 story house. At night they are literally crawling all over to the point that I have to keep lights on at night. What do I do? I don’t know what an exterminator costs and have spent lots of money on store pest control products. I rent and the landlord will not do anything. Really wasn’t wanting to move but is there any hope? How do I know if this can be controlled? What are the “symptoms” of a bad roach problem? Help!

Sounds like you have a serious problem. Aside from hiring an exterminator, you can try this website and see if it helps at all.

So sorry for your problem. Hope the above site helps you out!

You have described the “SYMPTOMS” of a bad roach problem already…YOU’RE LIVING IT! But brace yourself …..IT”S GOING TO GET WORSE!!!! The old saying is once you get ONE roach in your house YOU”VE GOT EM. You probably don’t know this, but IT”S TRUE: every ROACH has BOTH female and male sexual hardware so they DON”T need another roach to mate. They DUPLICATE THEMSELVES expotentially. They will continue to multipy! Too, lights will NOT keep them out, and they can flatten out to tha thickness of writing paper to fit into any and every nook and cranny. Your “fun” has just begun. Don’t leave food out and seal your clothes. Bug Bombs will fill your house with poison and contaminate surfaces. Even if you move, everything has to be washed shaken out and sealed, but then I haven’t even mentioned they lay eggs, carry germs, can be submeged in water for hours (and live), be in the cold or hot , they thrive. They could even hide in your pocket, and they can live on just about ANYTHING. I hope you like the “new neighbors” ’cause they are there to stay. You could try Boric Acid (powder) and call the exterminators, but I think you are going to be disappointed. WE can’t help ya anymore. There will always be more of them than us, but now you know. Sorry, but good luck. You picked the wrong “GiG” picking up “UNwantedstuff” Looks like they were doing exactly what you have to do now. Wow. We feel for ya . I hope at least that T.V. you mentioned is working out for you.

You saw one roach and one roach got away from you (before you could light it up) Now there are dozens of them? Different sizes and different kinds? I am just trying to get a clear picture of the facts…(not a drug induced frame of mind)
Was there food in those boxes you were inspecting? Or only stuff? Roaches are only interested in food ( not TV Guides, records, or nicknack’s.) Roaches can’t stomach that stuff (esp.8-track tapes of Celine Dion) so they would not survive.) They survive in dirty households, places that are cluttered with “junk”.
I applaud your efforts to reuse stuff, which generally works fine – but is tossed because it is out of fashion or something like that. I got stuff that should have died long ago, but I know how to keep them going better than new.
Anyways, your problem. I am guessing the house is mainly wood panels and wood baseboards. Saying it is “old” means nothing to me as to age. So I will guesstimate 100 years. Most all wood was either varnished (or painted white in any room that was not the living room).
Start in one room and make sure the baseboards and door and window casings are nailed up tight to the wall(so no bugs get can get behind it) and clean room THOROUGHLY” using “Pine-sol” type cleaner (yes it has to be stinky) When you finished a room close the door and keep it closed and use masking tape on the bottom crack so it would hinder the movement of insects(so they could not get into that room without eating through the tape-so you would see the entry hole if that were to happen.
Not that you have to clean the entire place. I would start in the room where the “first one” got away. These creatures are material beings, they don’t magically appear and disappear or walk through walls. Nor are they “beamed up to the USSEnterprize by Scotty”
You cannot freeze them out because you could freeze your water piping and that will break.
So you are on a clean(while I am at it),find and destroy mission. This time either whack it with a frying pan or get out a gun and shoot it dead.
Exterminators basically spread poison throughout your house, and if it can kill a roach, it can kill you. There is no “Roach only” poison.

Yes there is hope. I had a roach problem as well same cause I brought a 2nd item and they came with it. The pest controllers came in and placed maxforce cockroach gel around kitchen, bathroom around electrcails picture farms and all. Throught it was a joke at frist but he said the cockroaches think its food and eat it and die. It took 3 weeks to completely stop seeing them but it was safe and effective. Which ever exterminator you use make sure he garenttes his work do the cleaning first so you get a good treatment. If you can find a place were you can store the items before there brought into the house it would help a lot.

Sugarbaby, knowledge is power. The following handyman site has a section on pest control treatment, listing several varieties of cockroaches, but generally all treatments for them are the same, and the best repellant/insecticides listed are Demon WP, Talstar One, Cynoff WP, Cyonara 9.7, Cyonara Lawn & Garden Insect Control, and Dominion 2L:

Of course, actually the BEST course of treatment is not a liquid repellant/insecticide, but a GEL-like, slimey substance called gel bait. Such a product is EXTREMELY effective in killing off cockroaches and causing a DOMINO EFFECT of killing off all other cockroaches, all without the effort of having to constantly spray any sort of liquid repellant/insecticide; though, of course, you’ll want to make sure your kids/pets stay away from this gel. Such gel bait products that are good, as noted in the above-linked article, are Advance Cockroach Bait Gel, Avert Dry Flowable Cockroach Bait, Maxforce Roach Bait Gel, DuPont Advion Roach Bait Gel, and Combat Roach Killing Gel.
Clicking on either type of cockroach on the above-linked site, you will find comprehensive, yet brief, information to answer all the generally asked questions about cockroaches, including the excellent control and infestation-prevention methods to use against them. There are various types of products that are available that it discusses, from sticky, chemical-free barrier products like Tanglefoot to chemical insecticides, as briefly noted above.
I hope this helps! Good luck in getting rid of those nasty pests!

Don’t bring cardboard boxes into your homes , roaches often lay their eggs in them.
A good pest control treatment for roaches is an internal spray treatment, cockroach gel baiting in cupboards and other infected areas and a dusting of your roof void.
