I’m not sure if its still on the market or not, but there used to be something called “program”. I think there were a lot of problems with it, so I’m unsure if its a very effective method of flea control.

There is a flea pill for cats, but I don’t know that it is approved for more than a couple of days. http://www.capstar.novartis.us/cats/about_cats.htm

Well, you’re not supposed to pet them after applying it. You need to give it time to “soak in.” Try applying the drops at night, before you go to bed. This way, you’re sleeping & not tempted to pet the cat.

The products for monthly use, Frontline, Advantage, and Revolution are not applied head to toe. You put them on the skin between the shoulders and they spread through the skin. The instructions might call for you to apply them in a couple of spots ;but you don’t spread it all over the cat yourself. When properly applied, it will spread through the cat’s skin.
If applied properly, it will work for a month.
You don’t touch it because it will soak into your skin just like the cat’s and it can cause skin problems in humans.
I think the instructions for all of these tell you to not touch it and at least one says to wear disposable latex gloves when you apply it to your cat.
It does not stay oily, it is absorbed into the skin and spreads out so that any flea in contact with the skin or biting the cat will die.
As to Capstar – it will kill all of the fleas on a cat in about 5 hours but that is all it does. It does not remain active much past 8 hours or so.
Get Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution and apply it correctly.
Read all of the pages that comes with the product and follow the instructions carefully.
As to a monthly pill – there is not one.
