Yes, there is a difference. While they both eat wood, the body shapes are quite a bit different. Carpenter ants are large black ants (1 inch long) and termites are brown with white bodies (1/2 inch long).

They both eat wood. Termites make long tunnels with the grain of wood. Carpenter ants make round holes in wood surface and usually see a pile of sawdust on floor beneath hole.

Termites belong to the insect group Isoptera, related to cockroaches, while ants are related to bees and wasps, Hymenoptera. A baby ant is like a maggot, a baby termite is like a little termite. They are not closeley related at all, apart from being insects.

Actually carpenter ants (Camponotus) don’t eat wood. They carve their nests out of damp wood, but they don’t actually eat it.
Termites do eat wood. They have symbiotic gut bacteria that can break down cellulose and allows to gain nourishment from this tough food source.
Carpenter ants are large ants, black or dark brown in colour. They have long, slender legs, and the workers have large mandibles. Their antennae have a distinctive elbow in them.
Termites are heavy bodied, with shorter legs. They are usually pale in colour, biege or even white, and are rather soft, with large swollen abdomens. Soldiers may have very large mandibles, but most of the workers don’t have noticeably large jaws.
