is my landlord responsible for the cost of exterminating roaches?
there have been roaches since we moved in. the landlords have done little to get rid of them. we have given them a list of pest controls that they asked us to get for them before they would do anything. we did this over two months ago and they have done nothing to fix the bug problem. they use this spray that they can tell does not work. one of the landlords is an ex health inspector and told us that roaches don’t live in walls. so their concern for their tenets when they have a lot of children living there aging from a few weeks old to teenagers. this is very unhealthy and I’m just trying to find out what legal actions can be taking towards them to get this sever bug problem fixed.

In some states, like California, the landlord is usually responsible.
A first step would be to call your local government office. Ask them. They’ll be able to tell you which local laws or ordinances apply and assist you in taking whatever action is necessary.

What does your lease say?
I would first call your county offices and see what the laws are in your neck of the woods. It varies from state to state, and when did the roaches get there? Were they there when you moved it or are you the cause of them coming in? Are the kids throwing food or crumbs around?
In the meantime, go to Lowes or Home Depot and get some roach spray and spray the area and try to get rid of them.

I would call the local housing dept. and find out the law for your area. You may have to tell him you will deduct the cost from your rent for a Professional exterminator.Or you may have to threaten him with putting the full amount of the rent in a escrow account until he hires a Professional and get rid of the bugs

You didn’t inspect before you moved in, and you continue to live there anyway? Jeez…what were you thinking. Maybe they were your roaches in the first place. Quit whining an hire an exterminator! Hope you don’t have any kids.

There should be some governing body within the city, township, county in which you reside, that has control over rental units and their owners. You will have to locate them and lay your problem at their feet. Contact your county clerk if you live in a rural setting or your mayor, if you’re in a city type area, one of them should be able to help. The landlords should not only administer the pest control materials, if they opt to do this job themselves, they should also buy the materials. You should have nothing more to do with this than to have a cup of coffee and show them where the roaches are.

Why would you live in the filth these roaches and other vermin bring to your family waiting for a landlord or some city, state or government agency to solve the problem? Go to the hardware store buy a can of Roach Pruff by copperbrite and apply according to directions. Had you done this the first time you discovered the roaches they’d be gone by now and it’s less than $10.00. The consumer grade sprays that sell at the grocery stores don’t last long enough to kill the hatch from the eggs the adult roaches lay. They will only kill the adults and a few days later when the eggs hatch the problem is back. Buy some roach pruff apply according to directions and it will last long enough to kill the fresh hatchlings from the eggs. Apply the roach pruff as often as the directions say and you’ll be roach free. The reason you’ll need to continue to apply the roach pruff is because the other tenants are also waiting for the landlord or someone from the city, state or government to solve the problem !

In general pest problems are handled by the landlord. What you might want to do is to take care of the problem yourself and then bill your landlord. Landlords’ are generally very busy and hard to contact but if you take care of the pest problem they will greatly appreciate it. In general landlords don’t want pests in their apartments because it is their investment so I am sure your landlord isn’t purposefully ignoring you. If you do take care of the problem you will have gotten rid of the pests and the relationship with your landlord will improve. Another option you can do is to suggest Catchmaster to your landlord or you personally can use Catchmaster traps, http://www.catchmaster.com/main.php?page=Products, then have your landlord reimburse you. Either way you will have gotten rid of the roaches and in the end that is all that matters.
