is it healthy to give my 6 1/2 mo old yellow lab whole(fresh or frozen) apples to chew on?
rawhide is not good because if they eat it, it can get stuck in there digestive trac. i already have a kong, tongue and gets the peanut butter out in now time. i want to give him a variety of chew toys, but he chews them to peices except his doggie tire and kong. he goes through the nylabones in about an hour to 30 min!!!i have bought real bones for him but he gets bored with it.prefers to just trow it around and bonk me in the head with it!*ouch!* the ropes are good, just not anything attached.*ouch again!* he chews through balls too. i just figured apples might be good for him and he already loves them, but wanna be sure its not gonna harm him.i know i asked this before but some of the answers ticked me off…raw hide is not the best for them.

Apples are ok. Carrots, broccoli, etc.. Never give onions or chocolate.

well … fresh is great! frozen only summer time! when they really need some ice
but make sure he does not get them all the time because he will get bored of it as well…
if i buy a new toy i hide the old ones and when i think my dog got bored of his new toy i just get the old one out! they are so happy with the old toy again… etc u can try something like this ;o)
i would not give my dog any greenies or rawhide at all i see day to day what thoes things can do with a dogs stomach

My dog loves apples. When I eat an apple she sits and waits for me to finish it so she can have the core. I wouldn’t give him frozen apples though because it might be too hard on his teeth and the apple will get mushy when it is thawed.

My dog has the same chewing problem. Apples are good. you can also try the Galileo nylabones, they are a lot stronger. I also give her hooves, you just have to be careful when they get down to the end if they swallow the piece whole it would be bad, and they can smell sometimes. Tennis balls are NOT good for dogs to chew on because of the texture. It wears down their teeth really fast. Instead you should try racket balls or street hockey balls. Both are safe and don’t hurt their teeth.
You can also try filling the Kong with cottage cheese or peanut butter and freezing it overnight.

If you give apples, core them first…the seeds can be harmful if the dog eats alot of apples…just read this myself and am now more careful. Cabbage (especially the center core) is another good idea…carrots, tomatoes, pears…just about any crispy veggie.

I wouldn’t give him a whole apple, but frozen pieces are okay. My dogs love ice cubes too!

We have a 3 year old rottweiler who LOVES apples, bananas, grapes and just about every kind of fruit you can buy. I was concerned about feeding him “people food” and asked my vet about it. I was informed that before dog food was invented, humans fed dogs the same thing they would feed their own families. BE CAREFUL of over feeding fruits and veggies…some pets can get diarreah from too much roughage. Never feed your pets onions (causes kidney failure) and NEVER give any food or drink that contains caffeine. Animal bodies cannot process caffeine and it stays in their systems, slowly poisening them. If you want a hint for a chew toy, there is a company that makes a toy out of fire hoses…durable and fun!! Check out pet toy websites. Kongs are okay but once a dog figures out that they are really not indestructable, you might as well give them a pillow. As for the toy throwing, training and a lot of patience is all I can recommend for you. Good luck!

The seeds in apples contain arsenic, so they are fine if seeded first. … I like to hide tiny (cat kibble) treats around the house, so my dog spends the day searching for them… Just don’t put where he will knock stuff down to get to them…just behind doors, etc.

Cut up apples yes, whole apples no.Like Chetco said, apple seeds contain arsenic. It’s in small enough trace amounts, that humans can safely filter it out of their system.Dogs can not filter it out,it stays in their system. After enough are ingested,it will eventually build up to the point of being toxic.
