Im having problems with getting my landlord to fix problems with the home what can I do?
My family and I moved into a home in May 2009, We had to move in a rush and in the town we are now living we are not that familiar with. This home was going through renovations. The landlord agreed to have everything complete with in the first month. We agreed to move in because at the time we had no other choice. Well, as time has went on other things in our private lives and also hers things have came up to put off finishing the work to the house. We have now been in this house for over 6 months living only in parts of the house because work is still needing to be completed in most of the house. I told her last month instead of paying the the 800$ rent I was only going to give her half 400$ until the house was finished. That I did not think it was right for me to continue to hold up my end of the deal and she not. Well, after giving her this months check of 400$ she got someone over here to start the work on the house, they went to rip the carpet up in the living room and found black mold, the carpet man told the her that he could not lay carpet over that, and she insisted on him laying it anyway until she saw me standing there, so she went and ripped up the pad where the mold started, then had the man lay old pad down from another house, she pieced together carpet for the living room and then went on to my bathroom that floods every time it rains. she said that she would get the floor in there. Well the sun room and garage both flood when it rains and she refuses to fix the problem correctly she hires, people that really do not know what they are doing to half way fix problems. With the flooding going on it backs up into out house and it is more then I can do to stop it. Well I have also complained about Roach’s, and other critters, I have spent already 300.00$ out of my own pocket hiring pest Control to come out and try to get the Roach’s out. If I could move I would, my husband and I are handicap-ed, and live on a monthly budget, It is hard for us to be able to move. We like the home and would love to stay but am worried about what I should do to make her do the work correctly… Is there something I can legally do? How can I find a Black Mold Inspector to come out to my home? Is she responsible for my belonging that might or might not be affected with black mold? I live in a small town and we are considered outsiders here, with that being said anytime I go to the court house to complain it gets back to her, I’m scared I will not get a fair hearing here in this town. So what am I to do?

If I was you I would find another place to lived in. As 6mths is too long to not finish renovation, I can’t believed you lasted this long.
Well living in a small town it be hard to get out of this situation without being seen as the bad guys.
Best bet is to move to another town unless you really have to be in this particular town.
If you have to stay in the town, I would tell the landlord I’m leaving as you promised that the house be finish in one month, now it is 6 months. I’m sure in the 6 months time you tried to negotiate with the landlord to come with a solution but it hasn’t.
By doing this, no one going to give you peace as you know, its a small town, and the town people going to favour the landlord than you.
If you have to be in the town, try rent from a real estate agent rather than privately. And make sure you keep all paperworks and evidence you pay the rent as they going to look for an excuse to take advantage of you. Good Luck.
Years ago, people had cedar closets and cedar chests to keep their wool clothes, blankets and other clothes in so the moths would not eat them.
