I want to get an air rifle to help with a small rodent problem we are having in the out houses. My wife isn’t keen on the idea as we have children, I have the correct storage equipment that was left here by the previous occupants and the rifle would be pretty low power. I have tried poison and pest control want about six hundred quid for the pleasure of doing a half assed job. Would this be an overkill or is it a good idea??

Just don’t tell her that you have it until she finds out herself. It is pretty underhanded, but it works.

Were it not for the fact that you wife is against it, I’d say it was a good idea. However, under the given circumstances, it’s probably not the best idea. You have to ask yourself which is more important, the rats in the barn or the lovin’ in the house.

Check out http://www.uttings.com and price up a rifle and scope for £595.
Spend the remaining £5 on a bunch of flowers to bring her round.
Good luck.

The only problems I see with using an air rifle for pest control is the fact that you can only hit what you can see, and not all of that. For every rat you see, there’s about ten you don’t. Still, killing the ones you can is a good start.
If you get a .22 revolver, there is such a thing as “rat shot.” It is like a miniature shotgun, low power enough not to do much damage to the structure (less than a pellet from an air rifle) and it spreads to increase your chance of a hit. I have killed rats with both, and highly recommend the rat shot as it is less messy and easier to use. A .22 is not very loud either, about like hitting a nail with a hammer.
I’m guessing your wife grew up without much exposure to firearms if she’s scared of an air rifle. Your best bet is to take her shooting. Once she sees that that they are safe (air rifle or otherwise), and understands their complexities, she is more likely to view them from a technical standpoint instead of simply fearing them for lack of understanding. If it makes her feel better, childproof them. Gunproofing your children is safer and much more effective though.
Good hunting.

I would just buy a air gun not a rifle it is easy to handle and easy to store i think it is all right it is not dangerous for the kids or your wife just hide it so that your kids wont get it, the air guns or rifles make noise so maybe you could even buy it and use it without your wife knowing but i would tell her shell understand and if shes hard to convince buy it and then tell her so she cant say anything

im guessing ur wife grew up in a liberal state or wasnt exposed to fire arms. just buy it without her consent and show her how safe it really is.

Get a Crosman “Ratcatcher” they are called on your side of the pond. Make sure you have a trigger lock and let your wife be part of the decision. Honesty is the best policy.

The earlier you teach kids about guns, the safer they are. Have an NRA member you know get the Eddie Eagle book for your kids. Take them rat hunting so they know what the airgun can do and explain to them that it can hurt humans.
Marksmanship can be a great connector between father and children. My kids are grown and they still ask me to take them shooting.
