I’ve heard that a small amount of garlic powder is okay to keep away fleas. My do Sam is 80 lb. and I give give 1/4 tsp. twice a day.I also put sulfur in his water and i dab tea tree and lavender essential oil on his bandana. Obviously I don’t use chemicals but the garlic intrigued me. Is it safe in the amount I give him.

Don’t listen to what you’ve heard… Your pet might die if you give him anymore…. Don’t give him ANY!

I have also heard that garlic is okay for dogs, but have never tried it myself. Onions are poisonous to dogs and garlic is a type of onion right? I am still skeptical about giving it to my dog plus wouldn’t they smell horrible.

1/2 teaspoon a day IMO is too much. A small amount would be letting him have some meat that has been boiled with garlic once a week, that would be fine and enough to deter fleas. Im not against using essential oils for pets but remember that less is sometimes more when it comes to dogs. Their noses are very powerful and that will be so strong to him, I would actually dilute the oils in alcohol and just spritz the bandana once a week after it has had its weekly wash and dried, at most.

Speck; Garlic is a controversial thing, around Dogs. I don’t personally use it. But, ye know what? My Dogs don’t get fleas anyway. Period.
They *used to*, and I was for ever paying out for flea collars. Then ye know what I did? Years ago, I started feeding them raw flesh and bones. No more fleas!
Seriously. I can’t explain this. I lack the scientific ability and laboratory to seek the answer. All I know is that I’ve been feeding my Dogs exclusively on raw flesh and bone ~ with the odd bit of organ or tongue now and then ~ and fleas have simply become a thing of the distant past.
Sam will prove me right. Give him a chance to

Too much garlic will make the dog taste bad. Just use a little salt and pepper for seasoning and be sure to serve the rice as a side dish.

Ok, yes, many websites state that garlic is poisonous for dogs, however, they do not bother to mention it takes ALOT of garlic to cause a problem. A dog would have to eat over 0.5% of his body weight in onions to even begin the oxidative process that causes problems.
Garlic contains the same compound as onions, but onions contain far more.
Many naturopathey vets suggest using garlic for flea prevention and others.

I do not use it. I would suggest consulting a vet knowledgable in natural remedies before I considered it.

Garlic and onions can cause red blood cells to rupture, leading to anemia. I’d avoid it altogether as I’ve never been able to find the safe dosage level. Toxicity may occur after consumption of large amounts per pound of body weight or after a long period of consumption, or after even small amounts are consumed. If you can find how much is safe per pound of body weight then that would be ideal, but until then better safe than sorry. If anemia gets too bad it can lead to serious problems.

Fleas can be one of the most annoying aspects of owning a pet. They aggravate both you and your pet – dog fleas and cat fleas can and will bite people as well, and flea bites are itchy and a pain. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to deal with the problem of fleas – both preventative measures you should take to avoid them in the first place and ways to get rid of them once your house is filled up with these unwelcome guests.
