How do you get rid of ants without chemicals that my tortoise would consume when eating the grass?

I have an african sulcata tortoise that grazes in the back yard. I have lots of ants and mounds, but am afraid to put commerciall poisons down for fear that the poisons will be absorbed into the grasses and weeds that she eats.

You could try pouring boiling water from a kettle onto the ants nest area

I have heard that “Grits” the southern hot cereal similar to oatmeal but made with corn, when put on dry, not cooked, to an ant hill will kill the ants but I am not sure. I do know that bleach poured into the mounds will kill some and the others will leave the area. Can you confine the tortoise to one area while you experiment then move it to another area while you rotate around the yard erradicating the ants. Can you call your local vets and extension agents to see what they suggest?

Grits works as does rice also, both expand when wet and give small critters a serious tummy ache, if they eat enough they can actually explode. The ground needs to be really dry, other wise it expands before they eat it and ends up just being a big meal for them.

Pour boiling water into the hole of the ant mound and it will kill all the ants. Just don’t burn yourself.

an electronic pest controller. it emits a high frequency tone. the problem with ants is that by the time you see them you have already trained them to co-habitate with you. you can kill some but others have already transmitted to the nest the location of your goodies. the high pitch tone doesn’t kill them, it allows them to return to the nest with new information-annoying noise-forget the goodies i imagine. in any event it worked for me and i haven’t seen an ant in my house for two years. i had the device plugged in for a week and now it’s packed away where i can find it if i need it. good luck.
