John pilots a small plane on weekends. During a recent flight, he determined that he was flying at an altitude of 3000 feet parallel to the ground and that the ground distance to the start of the landing strip was 8000 feet.
a) what is Johns angle of depression to the start of the landing strip, show math.
b) what is the distance between the plane in the air and the landing strip on the ground. state formula if any is used and show math.

Draw a diagram and you will easily understand that
a) If the angle of depression is D degrees, tan D = 3000/8000 =3/8
which give D = 20.56 degrees
b) If S is the distance between the plane and landing strip,
D^2 = 3000^2 + 8000^2
thus D = 8544 ft
