Have you ever heard of this for flea and tick control?

I was at class the other night, and someone was talking about using a mixture of listerine and tea tree oil to control fleas and ticks. Has anyone heard of this, and does it work? this woman swore by it. Also, is it safer for dogs then the chemicals a lot of people use?
I have used listerine on horses that rub tails before and it works fantastic. but have never used it on dogs.
mjaynes2, thank you. That really answers my question. I agree and will not try this. I have never had any flea problems, but will not go this route if I ever do.

Tea tree oil (also called melaluca) is an antisceptic and is great for ear infections in humans or dogs (a few drops into the ear), but I’ve never heard of it as a flea repellent or using listerine for anything!

i never heard of that before but i heard that Rose Geranium oil works really good for that

Hey tea tree oil will not hurt< but I don't know about Listerine> I would ask a vet or you can always call poison control for pets, they have a 800 number. Hope it works out!

The ASPCA animal poison control center says
Tea tree, or Melaleuca alternifolia oil, does have toxic potential, depending on the circumstances of exposure. Clinical effects that may occur following dermal exposure to significant amounts of tea tree oil include loss of coordination, muscle weakness, depression, and possibly even a severe drop in body temperature, collapse and liver damage. If the oil is ingested, potential effects include vomiting, diarrhea and, in some cases, seizures.
I would not put this on my dog.

I have never heard of this. I have heard that if you spray Listerine on your porch it will repell mosquitos and fleas, but never heard of putting it on an animal.

Tea Tree oil is definitely a proven antiseptic. My dog had a major infestation up until about 2 months ago when i came across an herbal shampoo product provided by RosiesRemedies.com that had all natural ingredients like Tea Tree oil, aloe, eucalyptus, etc, etc
They also have an all natural flea control product that comes in the form of a liquid food supplement for your pet that seriously works great.
That’s what i would recommend for all pets–completely safe, non-toxic
Before i found this place i was using over the counter flea and tick medications like front-line and advantage and my dogs were getting sick from licking it off each others necks. It was horrible!
Since i stopped that:
They seem happier
Definitely have more energy
And they stopped getting sick!
