Has anyone ever used flea killer from Walmart?
I bought “Sergeants” Squeeze on for cats. I applied it like it said for all my cats (for some reason there is an outbreak of fleas in my apartment building 
) I applied it from the back of their head to their collar bone, and Im petrified that they will lick it. Ive caught one of my babies trying to lick their back already. It looked as though they couldnt reach. In anycase, im worrying really bad at this point. I did that the directions said, but it got on their fur, i really dont think theres any way around that, Im just scared they will lick it. What have your expierences been with these products?

I just washed 2 of the 3 cats whom I thought might lick their backs. The 3rd seems too fat to reach the area anyways.

Over the counter products can be dangerous to your cat–I saw a news piece on this. Only use products that you get from the vet. It is the only safe & effective thing for your pets. On the news piece, cats had seizures from these products.

my friends cat had seizures and nearly died from over the counter flea meds.
as for the prescription flea med.. I heard it’s bad on the liver. but I know a cat with fleas is pretty miserable, and may even become anemic.
there is an oral form of vet presribed flea med.

NEVER use any type of over-the-counter products (like Sergeant’s from Wal-Mart) as it can make your cat VERY sick or even kill the poor thing. Now, with that being said, as long as you applied it at the very back–along the spine, beginning at the head, there is no way your cat can reach this area to lick the stuff off. Hopefully, this one time will not seriously damage your cats. But, if they need to be treated for fleas again, please call your vet or you can get products such as Frontline and Advantage from your vet, a groomer or a well stocked pet supply store. NEVER use anything on your cat that you get at places like Wal-Mart–you could accidently kill your kitties.

Well, you asked for opinions! Those OTC products tend to be very toxic. I would wash your cats with Dawn dish detergent to try to remove as much as possible. If they are OK, just get Advantage or Frontline–safe and non-toxic as they do not get absorbed into the bloodstream like pyrethrins.

I have not had much success with Wal-Mart own brands, Sargeants or Hartz brands when it comes to flea protection.
I purchased Advantage at my Vet’s office and they never got sick from it. You squeeze a little around the cat’s neck and start a line from the nape of the neck, continuing all the way down it’s back in a straight line to where the tail begins. The cat will not be able to reach it’s backbone, so that is the line you apply the medicine to to keep your cat safe. And as long as you don’t rub this all over the cat’s fur, you shouldn’t have any problems with the cat trying to lick it off and get sick. Personally, I prefer the brands that the Vet’s carry because they are much stronger than any over-the-counter flea meds you can buy in stores. All my kitties are gone now, but I now have three dogs, a 75 lb. outside dog, a 64 lb. inside dog and an 18.2 lb. inside dog, so I still have to protect my house against fleas. As long as you continue to apply this medicine every 28 to 30 days, you shouldn’t have fleas on your cat.
However, if your apartment building is infested with fleas, your supervisor needs to bring in a professional exterminator to spray the entire building. If all of the tenants and their pets agree to leave the building for 24 hours to allow the spray to remain completely undisturbed, I bet you will find millions of dead fleas when you return the next day. This type of spray will continue to kill the larvae of unhatched eggs, as well, and your building will be flea free, as long as other people protect their animals from fleas, too. If they don’t treat their animals, you will always have this problem, but the fleas might stay away from your apartment if you continue to treat your cat and then set out a flea bomb once a month or so (leave for 24 hours undisturbed and then come back to your apartment to clean up the dead ones). Then maybe the fleas will run to someone else’s apartment and not remain in yours. Be sure to wash all bedding in hot water, including your sheets and whatever your cat sleeps on. Also clean all of your counter tops with a disinfectant after the initial 24 hour period has elapsed. It’s a tough job but once the initial treatment has been done, it’s a fairly easy routine to maintain as long as you continously use good strong flea medication on your cat and try to keep your apartment free of migrating fleas by using a monthly flea bomb. The really good strong ones can be found in Pesticide stores and they have worked extremely well for us. I know it sounds like a lot, but the initial treament is usually the worst one. I hope this idea is of some help to you because I know that flea infestation is really hard to put up with on a daily basis. It is very annoying and I live in an area that is also flea infested in the spring and summer months. If you decide on this route, always make sure you take all of your pets with you as this can be toxic to pets while the process is in progress.
Personal experience, fleas flitting here and there and a lotta general irritation.

Adams flea & tic spray or shampoo, you can get it at wal mart, its really good and it smells good too.

Sergeants flea remedies are very dangerous for cats. They can make adult cats very sick and they can kill kittens. Where I work we see several cats every year that were poisoned by over-the-counter flea products.
If I were you, I’d use dish detergent (not dishwasher detergent) and warm water and try to get as much off them as possible.
Frontline and Advantage are the only safe flea medicines. They actually work, they stay on the skin and don’t get into the cat;s system, and the effects last a month. Right niow, Advantage seems to work better than Frontline.
I’d suggest you get the Sergeant’s off your cats, then call a vet and see how soon you can put some Advantage on them.
