Gun ammo education?
Per California law I am a few days out from bringing home my new Springfield XD .40. This is the first handgun that I have owned, so I am still learning. I do not seem to be able to find much information on ammunition. I am trying to learn about the different types of ammo that are available. I want to learn about velocity, grain, etc. Does any one have a good web sites they can recommend to me? From what I understand the type of ammo that you use is VERY important for home defense, at least for the legality of it if I have to use it. Glazier safety slugs have been recommended to me, but then again so have Federal safety slugs. The main purpose for this fire arm is home defense with some recreational shooting on the side. I have no idea!!! Please help!!!

Ask the local ammo and gun shop. Or a US Marine. Where did you buy the gun? They don’t offer ammo? If you don’t know what you are doing, maybe you shouldn’t have a gun. Criminals don’t care what type of bullet you use, just pick one.

In most cases, pulling a gun on a intruder is enough to scare them off without ever firing a shot. But if it comes down to having to pull the trigger the type of ammo won’t matter.

You’ve screwed up already by not buying a Glock. As far as ammo, any factory new hollow points should work great.

For self defense ammo, you want hollow point bullets that will expand and cause maximum damage when they hit the person you are shooting at. They will also be less likely to pass through several walls and hit someone in the house next door if you miss as the expansion slows them down and makes it harder to pass through multiple walls. My recommendation for ammunition would be Federal Premium Hydra-Shok JHP ammunition. The largest 40 caliber is 180 grains and that would be your best. Its better to have a large enough cartridge which will take a person down in one shot rather that a smaller which will require several shots to take down an attacker.
