Gary Bettman stepping down?
Rumors of commissioner Gary Bettman’s pending departure escalated to the point where Bettman met them head-on last week and declared them baseless. But the stories that Bettman might step down — or be forced out — sooner than later do have some foundation. There are contentious issues among the teams and their commissioner, and the unbalanced schedule and U.S. television contract top the list. Bettman is right, of course, that not everybody is going to be happy with him all of the time, but he shouldn’t do his usual head-in-the-sand bit on this one. At some point, Mr. Good of the Game must realize that means the league is moving on without him. . . .

He answers to the whim of the people who pay the money. It’s not his fault.
Probably the biggest point that the big-wigs are missing is that if you dissapoint the core fans, hockey WILL disappear no matter how much to you appease the casual or non-fan.

I dont blame him for all the NHL’s problems, but I think a new blood would be a step in the right direction.

His contract runs through 2012 and he’s a hero to the owners for solidifying the salary cap. I doubt he’s going anywhere, but Brian Burke should be given the job if it becomes available.

He should step down. He was greedy and ruined the sale of the Pittsburg Penguins to by demanding last minute changes. Now Bettman doesn’t want to change the schedule until he know whats going to happen to Pittsburg. Well, he had a chance and blew it. Gary Bettman should have smoothed out those negations. Instead, he was a thorn in their side. Read page two of the link about the telephone call with Bettman.

We can only hope. lets look at the things Bettman has screwed up so far this year:
1) TV contract with Versus- Lets put the NHL on a channel that nobody gets! That will sure increase popularity
2) The All Star Game- First of all, he put it on Versus, and on a Wednesday night instead of its usual weekend slot. This move convinced me that Bettman is a NBA plant.
3) Bigger nets- I don’t think I need to be any more specific. If it happens, it will beat everything else on the list by far.
4) Unbalanced schedule- I personally don’t think this is too bad, but it would be nice for each team to see the other 29 teams at least once a season.
Of course even he had his good side. He forced the salary caps which were desprately needed, even if we did lose a season because of it. And the new game rules seem to be working well, especially the shootout

I think he almost has to. Considering the lock out, losing ESPN TV deal, attendance not back to what it was before, no major changes to try to make the sport more popular in the US!
Think it is time for a change!!

I’ve actually spoken to the man a few times and he seems to be an intelligent person with a good knowledge of the game and good intentions.
On the other hand,
He also makes decisions that place him at the top of my BONEHEAD LIST and has ruined the sport for fans and players alike
But he is smart enough to know a good thing when he sees it and I doubt he will step down voluntarily from his position
So…….
Let’s kill him

That would be a dream come true. He has destroyed hockey and expanded the league to the point that there is only one good line per team now!!
Need to shut down Minnesota, Tampa, Columbus, and Nashville to get quality teams back.
What a nerd chump loser he is. He shouldn’t have been hired in the first place.

I don’t think “shutting down” the best team in hockey (Nashville) is a good way to end hockey’s woes.

Good, I’d be very happy. One of the best days in NHL history if it happens.
Let’s go straight up presidential style and IMPEACH HIM!

We can only hope. Bettman did nothing but ruin the league. I can’t believe he’s actually talking of expanding the league again…all he sees is money, he cares nothing about league, even less about the game..
I think it’s just a matter of time before he’s forced out.
