Which is worse, letting him be out there on his own, o nhis chain, or sprinkling the fire ant poison in that area?

If you spray poison, don’t put the dog out there for a few days (make sure it rains too). But if you want, you can just leave the dog outside and he’ll learn not to mess with the little red things.

Yes the fire ants will bite your dog
Is is possible to put him in an area without the ants?
Don’t let your dog get near fire ant poison, it could poison your dog as well.. he can even absorb it through his skin.. or worse, lick it off his feet/skin & ingest it
Pour lots of soapy, very hot (boiling) water on the ant bed.. that will help & then repeat that over & over again until you see there has not been any activity

Yes, fire ants will bite anything that comes in contact with them, or anything that gives them aggregation
