Does the off brand flea control sold at stores just as good as Frontline?
I know fleas have different life cycles and can stay “dormant” for several week, or even months. I made it my mission to learn all about them and how to control them when we got our puppy who was covered in them. We put him on frontline and took all the proper measures we should in the house and such. We finally got rid of them a few months ago which means he’s been flea free for 2 months. But then we went to the dog park just as he ran out of Frontline and picked them up again. Since the cost of Frontline is 3 times the price of the stuff you can buy at the store, we want to go that route. So my question is, is the stuff you buy at the store just as effective as Frontline or Advantage?

The stuff at the store is worthless. Use Frontline or Advantage. I have found Advantage to be the best.

No! The chemicals in the over the counter brands are ineffective and unsafe. They’ve been on the market for about 40 years, and fleas started becoming resistant to them about 20 years ago. They can also cause severe reactions in pets, including skin lesions as well as vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures if enough of it is digested (like when the pet grooms itself). Frontline, Revolution, and Advantage are more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and in this case, that’s effectiveness and safety.

At one time the vet stuff was superior now they seem to all be just as effective or should I say ineffective. My dogs have terrible flea problem and the frontline just stopped working, I am now using sentinel and program and capstar when it gets out of hand and still using the old fashioned bath as the final frontier. Talking with my vet there is a trend where there seems to be a problem, however research has yet to show tolerance build up in flea population. One word of caution do not jump on the bandwagon for new products until you have talked with your vet.

No honestly Frontline and Advantage are the best nothing else is as safe or works as well. You can sometimes find it on sale at pet stores or on line pet stores. Some vets will sell individual tubes of it but not many.

Well,
I have to agree with the post that says “you get what you pay for”. With Frontline etc, you get
1) a pretty box
2) adorable commercials
3) a long list of bribed vets (just ask, most will admit to happily taking free product)
4) Mostly, if not exactly, the same chemical make up.
Just get a list of chemical makeups off the frontline (or whatever brand you prefer) and then a list of the generic product and take them to your vet. They will be able to tell you which of those chemicals are important and safe….in the end I think you will find many of th generic are exactly the same as the pricey brand names. But, don’t take my word for it, do your homework and ask a professional.

No Frontline and advantage are the best.
I ordered 6 months of advantage for the same price you get 3 month s for on line with a company I found on line named Joes. I’ll get you the addy after I sign off here
$44.00 six months supply.
I found it by typing “Pet meds” in web search and the second one down is joes, I checked them all out and his was the cheapest, they mail it right to your door.
Another thing to think about is every month you should use a flea bomb in your house, read the instructions very carefully as these are strong. Getting rid of fleas in the carpet and furniture in the house is as important as getting rid of the fleas on your dog.
Wal mart has the flea bombs 2 for $5.00
Hope this helps
