How good do you think he will be?
Did he make a bad decision by playing baseball, not football.

They could sign the all star team, look really strong all summer, and still crap out in August.

I think he will be very good. First of all he is a lefty. He can also get the ball up into the mid 90′s, and Notre Dame is no joke of a college baseball program either. He was 21-6 in College which is a pretty damn good feat. Being 6’5 also helps him out quite a bit. Considering that he’s never been a full-time pitcher in his life, yet the abilities are there, he’s solid talent. His fastball is of the sinking nature, which the Cubs have been high in drafting the last few years. This year his fastball was consistently hitting 91-94 mph with his max at 99 mph, which is stark improvement over his 89-92 mph fastball the season prior. In the Big East tournament, scouts clocked Jeff at 99 miles per hour twice, 98 three times, 97 six times and 96 eleven times. Also this past year, he ditched his weak curveball and mild splitter and instead went with a hard strong slider (81-84 mph) and added a changeup. Those additions immediately made him a better pitcher even if his line didn’t show it. He doesn’t have much control or command of his arsenal but he also doesn’t spend much of his free time working on baseball as most college pitchers do, so the Cubs feel they if they can get their hands on him they can make him a prime baseball talent. He also as far as football goes, lack the elite receiver speed, and would find it difficult to separate from corners in the NFL. He would be too slow to be considered a legit deep threat. Do not be surprised if a team takes him very late in hopes that he does return. Who knows, maybe the Next Marques Colston…….

Gauranteed money!
He would have been a mid-to-high draft pick in the NFL, but would have gotten just a fraction of the guaranteed money by way of signing bonus.
It’s a good move. If he flames out in baseball, pun intended, he can still give football a shot, ala Henson in Dallas.
Smart move.

I think my fellow answerers are kind of missing the question here. It is impossible in baseball more than any other sport to tell if a prospect will pan out or not. Samardzija has all the tools to be a quality major league pitcher, time will only tell if he can adjust to playing at the highest level. As far as the quality of his decision, Samardzija made a great decision. Baseball players have much longer careers than football players and also have a MUCH higher life expectancy. Assuming he would have the same talent in baseball and football, I think it is safe to say he will be much happier pitching 1-2 days per week than trying to catch a pass over the middle with a safety barreling toward him.

He actually has more baseball talent. The Cubs actually offered him millions not to play football but he turned it down. That’s how much talent they believes he has. He will a good pitcher.
The Cubs pitcher I’m waiting to see come up is Sean Gallagher. He looks great.

Yes I believe he made a good decision.
This deal gives him very good money over the next 7 years. If he does well it could give him the opportunity to make a major cash haul in 2014.
Also it was likely that he would not have been picked in the 1st round of the NFL draft. Under that scenario he would be very unlikely to earn over a million until 2011.

I think he’s going to be a pretty good pitcher. It’s hard to say if he’ll be a dominant number 1 starter. There’s just no way to know at this point. I like his attitude and mentality. He seems to be the type to just go out and attack whatever it is he’s doing. This article was written before he decided, and I think it gives good insight into what kind of a guy he is.

As far as if he made a good decision, I’d say yes. He’s got $10 million in guaranteed money which is way more guaranteed money than he would have made in the NFL. If he can make it to the majors and have any success at all he’ll make in upwards of $10 million a year, i.e. Ted Lilly, in his second contract. That would be an astronomical amount for a wide receiver. If he lives up the hype and is a number one starter, I’m guessing he’ll be making $20 million a year easy. Just look at Zito making $18 million a year. Barring chronic injury, he’ll be able to pitch a hell of a lot longer than he would be able to play wide receiver meaning he can expect to make even more throughout the course of his career. Of course there’s always the chance that he never makes it to the majors, in which case he’s screwed. I really think he’ll be at least alright and this will end up being the best decision of his life.
There’s a guy up there who said he’s a lefty. He’s a righty.
