Your best bet is a .22-250. They are very fast, flat shooting rounds, which is needed for hunting coyotes. It is a centerfire cartridge so I dont know the laws on that, but it is the best caliber for the job.

I would go with the 22 mag. or a 9mm Marlin camp rifle. The shotgun would only be good for short range.

I would pick eather the .17hmr or the .22mag. The 22 mag will have more knock down power than the 17hmr but they will both do the job at around 100 yrds. I would not try further shots than 100 yrds unless you are a good shot. hope this helps you out.

Start a petition to allow center fire rifles, and get a Ruger Model 77 in .223 .

There is no problem with any of the guns you listed. I shoot a mossberg 535 super mag and love it for quick shots and minimal pelt damage. If you like to get up close and personal when calling, a shotgun is a great choice. It is nice to have the pattern of a shotgun when the action is quick, or when a pair shows up. I have seen coyotes killed with a 17 hmr. The 17 is a little too light of a bullet past a hundred yards. In my opinion it is not a great coyote gun because if you hit the shoulder i have seen them get up and run away.
good things come to those who shoot straight.

The .17 hmr or .22 mag. Are way under powered for a clean1 shot kill.
It does happen on occasion but 98% time you will only wound the coyote he may die later or he may not.
Shotguns with #4 pellets are ok for thick brush but slugs are too expensive.
I hunt predators a lot and would not recommend any thing below a 223 as minimum.
The 223 gives you 300 yards easy kill on a coyote, plus the ammo is cheap.
What I yes for all predators is a 223, 25-06 and a 357 hand gun for up close and personal.
You can get this in a savage rifle if your on a budget.
I shoot the Ruger M77 Mark II bolt action and a Thompson Center Encore but these are a little higher priced over the Savage rifle.
Calibers I would recommend 223, 22-250, 243 or 25-06 are all out standing varmint calibers, the 243 and 25-06 also make a fine deer rifle also.
That is my thoughts on the subject.

I’m pretty sure you can in fact use centerfire rifles to hunt coyote in Ohio, except during deer gun season.

WRONG. People hunt varmints in Ohio all the time with .223 and 22-250. High-powered rifles are illegal for DEER HUNTING. And this is only because of the mass volumes of deer hunters in Ohio and lack of hilly terrain (Ohio is too flat and populaion is too great).

A 17HMR kills a coyote just fine,I have house cats bigger than most coyotes…yeah I have a 18 pound fat lazy cat lol. I use a .223 AR-15 or a remington 700 in 22-250 both are great guns and rounds for coyotes but since you can’t have a high powered rifle which basicaly means no centerfire rifle go with the 17HMR or 22mag. I have a savage 17hmr with the accutrigger and I love it, great shot, my brother has a marlin 917 HMR and it’s really nice too both are bolt action the marlin magazine holds 2 more rounds that a savage magazine.A 3x9x40 scope on there is all you’d need.

Sounds like Ohio limits you to shotgun or rimfire for coyote hunting. I’d use the .22 Magnum although the .17 HMR will work. The Magnum has been around longer and is tried & true as a coyote gun, though.
Best.

I live inIllinois and its the same laws as Ohio, no high powered rifles for deer, but you can use them for coyotes, so are sure you cant use them for coyotes? If you were to pick a gun from the list above, i would go for the Savge .22 mag because it is a pretty decent round for coyotes, but it can be a weak at a long range. If you do find out you can hunt coyotes, i would use a 22-250 or a .243, or a 223.

Zach, I live in Ohio too. It is legal to hunt coyotes with a high powered rifle. I do it all the time. This shouldn’t be confused with deer hunting, which is illegal to hunt them with a high powered rifle. I even use high powered rifles to hunt groundhogs, etc. Trust me, I have asked the game warden who said it is ok. If you don’t believe me, just visit http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/ and look the phone # of you local ODNR office and ask them. To answer you question, a .22 mag is too small. I know this because the first coyote I kill was with a .22 while I was squirrel hunting. It took several shots just to down it. I have killed several coyotes with my 12ga slug gun while I’ve been deer hunting. But, when I’m doing nothing but hunting coyotes, I use my .270, which works great. I hope you kill a bunch because they are getting way over populated. Good luck.
