Could my mechanic be wrong?

Last monday my car spun out of control and I ended up running over this really flimsy tree. After that, i began hearing these tick tick tick sounds on the undercarriage of the car.
I took it to the machanic and hes saying that its just the metal expanding/contracting after being driven.
I explained that the sound came only after the accident but he still says nothing is wrong with it.
What do you think?

if its just doing it after driving he is probably right. it sounds like the exhaust is heating something up.

i say hes right because it happens after the accident and the car should be making tick tick noises because the exhaust is being over heated

I’d say have a look underneath.
Assess the drivability, is the car behaving any differently with regards to acceleration, handling and so on?
Then you should see if there’s any damage to the undercarriage, such as scrapes or holes.
If you’re still in doubt, see another mechanic and get a second opinion, you’d do it if it was your health.

He could be right, but i would be tempted to believe he is mistaken. There are a number of metal fasteners that could have been jarred lose and are swinging and hitting things making the noise. I suggest you take your vehicle to a different shop, explain what happened, and ask them to find out what the cause is.

Have you checked it’s nothing more than a branch or a twig from the tree caught on the underside and scraping against the wheel? I’ve had that happen.

He could be right, he could be wrong. Get someone to put it up on a lift & look at it – might be a bit of branch caught up, your escapade may have bent or dislodged the exhaust, just get it looked at. Simple.

It also could be a damaged U-joint, causing your driveshaft to tick because of being loosened (if rear wheel drive)

Did he actually put it on a lift to inspect it? If not, have that done so you can get the real answer to your question. Exhaust systems do make ticking sounds when cooling off after use and it is more noticeable in the cold, but to be sure…have it inspected.

You ran over a tree. Obviously it pressed against the metal under the car. It bent it somewhere a shade bit closer than it was before. Just enough for a tick sound. Not to worry. When it becomes a “slam, bang, whomp, scrunch, wheeze sound” then it is easier to find.

After an accident, you probably were looking for a problem to show up. The ticking was there all along and it just came to your attention now………
For example, ride in someone Else’s car for a while and notice how quiet it is compared to your own. Yet, after a while you become aware of sounds that were there when you got in!
