I just moved to an apartment complex that has been renovated quite nicely. After living here a week I started noticing a strange smell that smelt like natural gas. I told my apartment complex about the smell and they reassured me that we don’t even use gas and after that I never really smelled it again. Today I came home to find my closet floor full of water so I thought there was a plumbing problem and that the smell that I had smelled might be sewage. I called maintenance and they came out to take a look. They went next door to the unattended apartment to see what was the cause. When the guy came back, he informed me that there was a busted line going into the a/c and it was leaking all over the place. He turned off the next door a/c and preceded to clean up the mess in my closet. My closet floor is wood and now has a white powder glaze to it. Could this be freon? What makes matters worse is that this whole past week I have had the most irritating cough with alot of congestion. I went to the doctor the other day because I thought I had the flew or something. They informed me that it wasn’t a bacterial infection and that my throat and nasal area was just highly inflammed. This apartment complex just put in these new a/c units so I know they are up to the new standards. I’m wondering if one can get sick from being exposed to large amounts of freon with the updated standards. If so, how serious is this and what kind of legal actions could I take, if any?
