Can you be arrested for things said on the net?
I was watching leno one nite recently and he read an article that claims you can’t be charged for things you say on the net. I ask because I’m in a fued on a site I visit with a person that is claiming to have the law after me for harassment and stalking. Yes it’s a dateing/porn site. And she is pissy because I turned her down months ago and continues to pester me about it. Which for 11 months now we have been posting back and forth insults. Sure it’s childish, but she simply refuses to stop. And this is what provokes me to respond then she reports me. I just want her to leave me be. So I’ve said some pretty harsh things in an attempt to tick her off enough to go away but she just fires back then removes her postings and reports mine. I have not made threats of bodily harm or property damage just insults. So as she states can I be legally charged for anything or is it just hear say. I just want her to leave me alone.

Yes, you can. If you live in the United States, many states have laws against “cyberstalking” and “harassment” on the computer. Just don’t respond to her anymore if you’re worried about breaking the law. If you are reported, try and find an attorney or a free legal advice clinic.

If you say things that are not true about a person (with in sertain guidelines) that can be considered slander. You could get introuble if the information is false and that info gets a person fired from there job and that person wishes to press charges you could POSSIBLY get in trouble. So, most likely no.

You should be mindful of what you put in writing online or elsewhere. I don’t know the laws associated with online bickering but I can tell you it is a federal crime to make threats to anyone via telephone, so if you’re using a modem to get online then you’re on the phone. Not to say you’ve made threats, but it is very easy to do without realizing what you’ve written and how statements are percieved.

Depending on your local and state laws, YES. There are a number of things that certain charges can be filed on.
Never make threats on life, or blackmail. Other charges, like harassment, are usaully noted in a report for future refferance. If she/he is local, and something happens to this person, law enforcement can look to you for answers. I suggest you leave well enough alone, and get on with your life. She/he wasn’t good enough for you.
P.S. Note to yourself, you could turn the tables and save her reports and file harrasment complaints on her, but do not respond to her!!!
