are there health risks to excessive exposure to sewage odors in my condo? (say 3-4 times per year my home is?
My condo board wants to do preventative sewer routing 3-4 times per year through my unit only. The plumbers have stated this means placing a large commercial router right in my living room and that sewage debris may fly or spray off the router and that the routing will leave my home smelling like sewage. Are there health risks involved with my home being unnecessarily exposed to sewage fumes four times a year? I have a five year old child. Also, can I use a light to light a candle or cigarette if my home has been exposed to sewage odors due to the sewer routing? Even if there are no inherent health risks, I am smart enough to know that odors are absorbed by soft surfaces and fabrics…meaning my furniture, bedding, curtains, etc. will be absorbing the sewage odor unnecessarily four times a year. Are there any documents or papers that I can provide my board that would prove this will damage my unit and belongings and/or pose a health risk?

The fact that the plumber says debris will fly off the the router – well that means lots of bacteria to me. If the smell stays the bacteria and debris is still there. I would only let them do this if they call in a service such as ServiceMaster to seal all your cabinets, closets and cover all your furniture before the routing, then return to do a thorough cleaning afterwards.

Call another plumber – or two. Seriously. Explain what this person is suggesting, and that you’re seeking alternative methods. Estimates are typically free. Maybe this can be done from ANOTHER location. They do not have the right to come into your unit and spray their poop on your stuff. I also have a daughter, but even without a kid, I DON’T THINK SO! Also call the health department and find out if this is allowed!

preventative care shouldn’t have to be done more than twice a year. How often have you run into problems? Also The only place to access the main is in your living room? You must mean they have to pass through the living room right? You have a basement, right? Get some more contractors to take a look for alternatives. As for health risks, I don’t believe there are any.

Sewage gas is toxic. and long term exposure can cause health affects. You may be able to find information on the EPA website.
