There are various sprays and soothing shampoos available for dogs with skin irritation on the web that soothe the coat. It could be dry skin if their are no “hot spots,” red weepy places. This usually does the trick.

Do not feed him those big brands (Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, etc.)! They have a lot of byproducts in them, which is pretty gross and not all that healthy for your dog. I would suggest the Nutro brand. They have a lot of variety and the taste is supposedly good. They come in both dry and wet, and what they suggest you do is mix the dry with the wet. It’s a good combination. You should definitely try that brand.

Try chicken soup for the pet lovers soul. Or you can try to find a dealer in your area of something I just found out about called Columbia River Natural pet foods. It sounds like a great food but may be hard for you to get depending on your area. This is their e-mail address.

Feed a high quality food – not found in supermarkets or the large pet stores – look in smaller pet stores that focus on high quality. Use one special for skin allergies such as Avo. Add some wild salmon oil made for dogs to his diet – in capsules or liquid form. Take him off all the food he has been eating, replace with new ones such as if he’s been having chicken, replace with turkey, duck, beef, etc. If the change of diet and the oil doesn’t work, then ask your vet to put him on a lose dose antihistamine.

Try a hypo-allergenic food for your dog. Many dogs have allergies to wheat and/or beef. Most of these foods are prescription diets that you will have to get through your vet, but they can give your dog the nutrition he needs without the reaction. The IVD diets have protein choices such as fish & potato, duck & potato, rabbit and green pea, kangaroo & potato. They have no extra additives or fillers. Since food allergies are hard to define, a better quality food or ones with different grain and protein sources should help. You may have to go by trial and error to find one that’s right for your pet, but there are lots of options and you should eventually find one.

I got my dog from the humane society, he had extremely dry skin with flakes & he was scratching like crazy. The vet told me to give him 1/2 a cup of nuts(peanuts are the best) as well as 1 can moist cat food per day. That was 6 years ago & still no more dry skin!

I suggest taking him to the vet. He may have food allergies. Of course, believe it or not he may be allergic to something in the air such as pollen.
Just went through this with my daughter’s dog.

Your dog could have allergies, you need to consult your vet, some dogs are allergic to pollens and grasses just like humans and this can cause skin problems. Don’t let it go as scratching can lead to skin infections.
