Any home remedies to ward off fleas?

I use the Advantage flea drops and they work great, but I’m concerned about the long term affect of pestisides on my dog. Last year one dose we put on him caused a reaction and he ended up with a really bad sore on him. Since then he has been ok with using them but I’m very leary. Any home stuff out there that has worked for your dog???
We dont have any fleas in the house. My dog doesnt have any right now beause of the Advantage flea drops. I’m just looking for an alternative to the Advantage.

mix yeast with his food. You can probably find yeast tablets at a health food store. For some reason fleas don’t like it.

Garlic is very good for warding off fleas as well. I give my dogs one garlic-capsule daily (available at Wal-Mart for 2 USD for a 60 quantity bottle).

one thing you can do to really help your dog is to treat your house and yard. many pest exterminators have pet safe products that they can use to get your flea problem under control. giving your dog flea meds is good, but if he continues to go out into an invested yard, he will bring them inside. and then you and your family will get bitten too! fleas carry diseases.

try giving your dog a garlic tablet. or if you’d rather put chopped up garlic in your dogs food or wrapped up in a piece of lunch meat.

I read an article the other day about natural bug flea repellents: It said to soak a dog collar in lemon juice with lavendar and basil. Let the collar dry thouroughly and place back on dog. This would ward off pests for a few weeks. Any takers? I thought I might try this with a couple of bandanas I place around my dog’s neck for dressup!!!

First off you need to Bomb your house to get rid of the existing flea’s and after you have gotten rid of the flea’s you can wash your animal with Dawn dish soap. do this twice a month. do not do it anymore than this because it will dry out your dogs skin. another option is to by brewers yeast you can find this at most pet stores and stores like wal-mart, target, or k mart anyone that sales pet supplies. the only down side is that it will give your dog gas for awhile. but the up side is no more flea’s and it will only cost you a few dollars a month

Garlic in their food.
I believe you can also use Borax on the carpets – sprinkle it all over, use a broom to really get it in there, then let it sit and vacuum it out the next day. It dries out the fleas somehow. This site has a bunch more ideas including eucalyptus leaves, ways of trapping fleas, etc:
