Animal rights… what ticks you off?
I love animals, all kinds. I feel that people have a duty to speak for the little ones that can’t. I am not against hunting to control overpopulation, or for those cultures that really use what they hunt, but too often our pets, including fish are abused. I checked out 5 fish stores before I decided which one would get my business. I won’t buy fish from a store that sells sick fish or tattooed fish etc… This world is full of sick people and a lot of times just people that have no idea how to take care of animals or know what’s right from wrong. Our pets are the victims of our ignorance. Animal abuse is everywhere and right next door to me, what are you seeing?

Tatooing fish is indeed a sick practice, but I wouldn’t go so far as to not buy from a store that sells them.
And creating hybrid cichlids like blood parrots is really sick.

This world is cruel to animal and we can’t stop it in one night. But there are groups of people protesting against animal cruelty and slowly they are getting more attention. Hopefully one day this world will be against abusing animals..
One time, I went over seas. (i’d rather not tell where) but there was this kittten, I’m not sure how old but it was so skinny and so little it looked SO sick. I saw these teenage guys get a piece of string and tried hanging it! Like wtf! I was shouting at them to stop. Damn stuff like this makes me feel so helpless.. I wish I could help save every single animal from abuse.
But some people just simply don’t care. They don’t think animals have feeling at all. I guess hat’s why they’re so blind to the pain animals receive..

Tattooed and dyed fish, and store owners who are more concerned about having their shelves of dry goods look nice so employees are put to work on stuff like that than cleaning tanks and cages, or removing dead fish. If I can’t even see into a fish tank for the algae, I’m certainly not going to buy the fish!
I’ll post some photos of some of the tattooed fish for people who haven’t seen them.

Owning a pet is a big responsibility. A person should never cause intentional harm to any animal. If you are a hunter, make sure the animal doesn’t suffer needlesly. Kill it as quickly as possible. Also, don’t just kill for the sport of it. Use the meat.
As for the animals we keep as pets, get them to the vet when needed. If you can not afford the vet bills then you probably should not have the animal. Right now I have two cats, a dog, my aquarium and my daughter has a gecko and a couple of frogs. All of which we care for and enjoy. But there does come a time when the animals are in poor health. Please don’t make your animal suffer for your sake. If the animal is sick and in pain and there is really no cure, take the step and have them put down. It’s hard, I’ve been there. But it is something that must be done.

My neighbor used to abuse his two cats before I reported him.
I’m not against eating meat, but blatant animal abuse makes me furious.

Hi Snoepje, I don’t think there’s a lot that can be done about people who knowingly treat animals cruelly because our society doesn’t criminalise this type of behaviour but someone who embezzles money from a multi-national corporation is seen as public enemy #1. I’m not saying this is acceptable but this double standard is a sad reflection of our supposed ‘civilised’ society.
What can & needs to be changed is the almost total lack of good & coherent information about fish keeping & especially Goldfish & Bettas who endure untold misery through ignorance simply because they are cheap & plentiful but their pain & suffering is no less than that of a fish costing $10,000.
I have no interest in points or popularity on here but each time I get a ‘Best Answer’ email I feel I may have made a small contribution to reducing the suffering of fish & that’s a nice feeling.

TATTOOED FISH?!?!?
WTF?!?!?
(thanks for the above photos….Geez, I thought dyed fish were awful)
Jeez, how vain can people be to need something that “special” or “unique”. Holy Cow….
As far as animal rights…..the thing I am most against is factory farming of animals…..I got no problem drinking milk, or making scrambled eggs, shoot, I’m a big fan of grilled steak myself…..But I am really against factory farming…..
So I try to buy those things from my local farmers (Gurnsey dairy or Northville Farms here in the Motor City)

I recently complained to Wal-Mart about the care (or lack thereof) of their fish. I agree, it is sad that animals are sufferring at the hands of people who don’t know any better, but that doesn’t make them evil people. Sometimes they honestly beleive they are caring for their pet properly and are crushed when the animal falls ill or dies. But like you say, there are plenty of people who know better (*cough*Wal-Mart*cough*) but aren’t motivated enough to care more. It’s frustrating.

fish are one of the most abused pets out there it doesn’t help that most people who buy fish never do any research on the species they just look at the nicest fish and decide to buy them
later it turns out the fish has delicate needs or refuses to eat dry food so it dies in the end
its just sad
i never heard of genetically altered cats wow thats horrible
