Salt does kill slugs, but only in direct contact and it also kills plants, not a good solution.
There’s a good pellet/bait product available which is based on iron phosphate instead of the traditional and highly toxic metaldehyde, I believe it’s marketed under the brand name sluggo in the US, and under various names including advanced slug killer, in the UK.
You can also use a natural biological control consisting of nematodes which parasitise slugs, this is mixed with water and then applied to the garden soil.
But probably spider stew.

Beer traps are very easy, work very well, and are an organic way to prevent slugs and snails from ruining your plants. The cheaper the beer the better. They will be attracted by the sweet and yeasty smell, crawl in, and drown. I use plastic bowls around areas where they tend to ‘congregate’ and fill them with the beer.
Here is a link with more detailed info about making these traps http://www.ehow.com/how_4724852_beer-traps-slugs.html

the baits mentioned by ‘hmmm’ , those using IRON PHOSPHATE as the ‘killer’ ingredient, are just TOPS!!!…. they really work GOOD!!….they are safe around kids pets and wildlife… they turn to fertilizer if the slugs don’t eat them….. and they do the job… they interfere with the slugs digestion, and they crawl away and hide and die!!….. there’s other baits out there that contain something else, other than IRON PHOSPHATE, but they are terribly toxic … so read the label and get the right one, ok?…. I have a big shade garden with lots of hostas and if not for this product, I’d have to look at holes in all of them!!…. I get mine at Lowe’s….

other brands I know of are Slug-go and Escar-go…. ask at your nursery for it…..we put new down about every three weeks… we had a very rainy few weeks here lately and have used a little more …but it doesn’t just melt away in a ‘usual’ rain…. doesn’t matter to me, tho… it’s well worth the cost, no matter what I’d have to pay!!…. (it’s not that much tho)
