Deer Hunting Question?

Slugs and Snails
I have a 12 gauge shot gun with a barrel threaded for choke tubes. Can I shoot a slug through it. In Illinois, you are not allowed to use a high powered rifle that I used to to use in other states. Will it jam or harm the gun??

Yes you can use slugs in a choked shotgun if, it is a cylinder bore or modified choke. If you do not know what size choke you have take it to a FFL or a gunsmith. Depending on what brand of shot gun it is you could buy a rifled barrel. You will have better luck making a clean kill if you use good slugs. Rifled slugs will work in smooth bore and rifled barrels but saboted are for rifled barrels.

cylinder choke or modified should be fine. you might want to take a paper plate out about 50 yards and shoot it a few times to check your point of aim. shouldn’t be any problem. good luck.

You can shoot foster style slugs out of that type barrel. I recommend an improved cylinder choke or a rifled choke. The inproved cylinder is the tightest choke usually recommended by any manufacturer of smoothbore for shotgun slugs. Rifled chokes do make a difference usually, but cost more.
Most shotgun manufacturers sell these type of chokes for their shotguns. There are third party companies, such as Hastings ,that make chokes for many different shotgun manufacturers. Just remember not to exceed the shotgun shell length and load usually stamped on receiver of the shotgun. Also check the barrel to determine maximum shell length and load as this might be different from the receiver. Just becasue you have a 3″ magnum capacity shotgun receiver doesn’t mean you can shoot 3″ mags out of the 2-3/4″ mag max barrel…
Your shotgun or yourself will not be harmed by shoot slugs through it as long as you follow your manufacturers suggestions.
Smoothbore shotguns should be used for short distances. Accuracy usually suffers after 50 yards. There are exceptions to the rule. For more information. Check to see if the your brand of shotgun has a website. They usually have a FAQ online that explains your options for different hunting situations and purpose.
Remington, Winchester, Browning, Mossberg, Beretta, etc all have websites with guidelines for their products.
Good luck with your deer season!
