I will not be hunting with it very often and i do not want to pay 100 bucks for a slug barrel.

you can it will have a limited range for accuracy most 870 expresses have a screw out type choke you should be able to pick up a rifled slug choke for about 25 bucks will make it more accurate out to 75 to 100 yds or so

yeah, you can, but go buy a rifled choke tube for 15 to 25 dollars. that way you can rest assured that you won’t damage your barrel and you’ll have the accuracy to kill deer at 100 yards and under.

Bound’s hubby here:
Yes, you can shoot slugs out of the standard barrel of your Remington 870 Express; however, you will need to take a couple of precautions and keep in mind some limitations.
First, you must shoot your slugs through the most open choke tube you have, either a rifled slug choke of a (open) cylinder tube … improved cylinder is the most constricted choke tube you can use. The group size of your shots will be greater than if you used a “slug barrel”.
Second, if your 870 Express standard barrel is one of the ones with a fixed choke, you must realize you will stretch the choke, and it will no longer be a full choke after much use.
Third, with the standard barrel, you will be giving up rifled sights … so your ability to “plant” your shots. In order to compensate, you will have to purchase a set of adjustable rib sights, or some optical sight and mount for your shotgun’s receiver.
In retrospect, the money you spend to be able to place your slugs from a standard barrel will probably rival the cost of a discounted deer barrel. Also, in many states that allow/require the use of slugs, also require that they be fired from a stand down into the ground, to limit a stray round flying across the country side. You are responsible for where your slug lands, and with sights, you know where they are going!
Good luck!
