Why don’t anti-spyware/virus software really remove 100% of the infection even if updated?

It’s my opinion that these programs are scams perpetrated by the senders of the infections; ie “i’ve infected your computer and the only way to get rid of it is to buy my anti-software” What’s up?

You’re not the first one to speculate this. You completely forget about marketers, the main reason for spyware.
Viruses are just awesomeness programs that spread without people knowing. If you can make one that seems to survive without the need for you to operate it remotely, it feels like creation of something ‘alive’….

Antivirus and antispyware software rely on a series of definition files. What they do is they scan files for pieces of code that they know are bad. When they find that code, they know that something is wrong. As a result, new infections or inflections that contain variations on code (that don’t trigger an antivirus or antispyware definition) don’t get caught.
However, there is good news. If you use NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com) with Advanced Huristics or Norman Sandbox, these programs can help catch new variants of older viruses. NOD32 still relies on definitions, while Norman Sandbox evaluates what the program does, but these two programs seem to find most viruses. Please be aware that you can only run one antivirus at a time.
As for the infections that say “You’re infected and you can only get rid of the infection by paying me,” those people are simply evil. A great antispyware remover that gets rid of most of those is Spysweeper.
Please be aware that the programs I’ve discussed in this article do cost money, and it’s appreciated by software developers everywhere when you pay for software.

1. Variants of viruses/spyware are created almost daily.
2. You must keep your virus/spyware definitions up to date.
3. Many viruses/spyware are memory resident, so even though your removal software “thinks” the problem is solved, it may not be.
4. Viruses can reside in numerous places (folders) on your system, as well as numerous places in the registry. Not *all* antivirus programs remove *all* viruses completely all the time.
I don’t think the removal programs are scams. If you run Spybot or AdAware on a system that hasn’t been checked in say, 2 years, you will find hundreds (maybe thousands) of instances of spyware. These programs are not developed by the “senders of the infections/spyware”.
Symantec, Network Associates and Sophos do not employ hundreds of people and pay them very well to sit there and develop viruses! They are paid to try to keep up with the thousands of hackers, crackers, kiddie-scripters, etc. around the world.

thats because the software that you are using is the one creating the viruses. they create newer infections so that you avail a new one (spending $). its their way of merchendising.
