Anthony Chatswick was not what you would call a normal boy. His tousled black hair and blue eyes gave him an unusual appearance. Because of that people usually stayed away from him. Not that he minded at all, he enjoyed being alone.
He was alone again during lunch seated at the far end of the school grounds behind the dilapidated climbing wall. He was felling rather bleak. He was staring at John McKinnon and his buddies talking excitedly about the big match next Thursday. Why is it that he has friends and I don’t? Anthony thought speculating. Oh right, he thought to himself. It’s because you’re the new kid. No one wants to have anything to do with you. He missed West and Ska. They had been his only friends in California. Sure, they had their ‘little problems’ as West descried them. Being at a state school that was given ‘special’ children that had been delinquents had hardened him. It had made him see what it was like to be part of the other side. His eyes wandered away from the group and settled on another group near the trash cans. Oh no, He thought predicting the trouble that always radiated around Dean Johnson and his cronies. As usual he was picking on Dan ‘dribble’ Malcolm. Not again! It seemed Anthony was the only one who ever seemed to stand up to Dean. In reality he was just another big baby that only ever seemed to find solace in others pain and shame.
“Leave him alone Dean.” Dean turned to face Anthony. He let go of Dan who scrambled away a terrified look on his face. “Thanks,” he said hurrying past me. The cruel smile and he said trying to sound confident but the fear in his eyes betrayed him, obviously not wanting to go too far. “What’ll you do, you big mommies boy,” his other cronies Doug and Tom chuckled. Anthony smiled, “I’ll do to you what I do to all those big babies who mess with me.” Dean didn’t move but looked very hard at the floor as if his big stupid head was actually thinking for once. “You know I think you should leave us alone,” he said finally an enigmatic smile breaking out on his face. “Because otherwise I’ll tell everyone how you cried like a baby when your mommy told the principal about when daddy disappeared,” he said a big ugly grin cracking the thoughtful expression on his face. “I didn’t cry,” Anthony said defensively. Dean scowled again. “Don’t try denying it Ant, I heard you. when you got called to the principals office on your first day here,” he said getting excited. Mrs. McGregor asked why your dad wasn’t there and your mom said it was a ‘sensitive issue’ and that he had gone missing and you started sobbing like a baby.” He shoved Anthony against the climbing wall. “Isn’t that right Chatswick, huh?” He shoved him again, harder this time. “Huh?” Doug and Tom moved closer forming a barrier between Anthony and the playground. “You’ve messed me around one too many times Ant, now I’ve got my chance to mess you up.” Then he took a swing at Anthony. It connected hard with his jaw. Doug and Tim grabbed his arms from either side of him. The pain from the blow made his head throb. Dean punched him again hard in the gut. His stomach gave a sickening lurch, he felt as though he was going to throw up.
“Not so tough are you now, Ant,” Dean gave a snort of laughter. Doug and Tim Guffawed.
Anthony felt a hot burning anger. He thrashed but the goons held him fast.
“Don’t try and escape Anthony,” Dean crooned.
Anthony scowled up at him. He could feel blood oozing out of his split lip.
Control yourself Anthony! Think of a logical way out of the situation; don’t fight if it’s a losing battle. It seemed so long ago that his father had said those words to him.
He concentrated on finding a way to escape. His eyes rested on the large clock above the main entrance to the school building. It was 10:58. If he could just hold Dean until 11:00 when recess ended he might just get away with a few bruises and a split lip. Even Dean was afraid of getting to class late, because of Mrs. Hilton who was a disciplinary force not to be reckoned with.
“If your mother could just see you now,” said Anthony tauntingly. “Wouldn’t she be so proud of you, beating up an innocent three to one,” he said trying to prolong the taunts. 10:59 come on, come on! Thought Anthony desperately, one more minute.

The bell rang. Saved by the bell! How ironic.
Dean scowled fiercely. Don’t think I’ve finished with you, Chatswick. I’ll be back again, this time I’ll kill you.
