What you need to know about insect repellents
Jun.03, 2011 in
Mosquitoes

If you fly RC model planes in summer then you’ll probably know all about just how irritating flies, sandflies and mosquitoes can be. I tested two insect repellents and found one very good, one absolutely useless. See which “big brand” one isn’t worth wasting your money on if your an RC model flier.

herers the thing brudda! Aeroguard does repel flies better by use of the chenmical “deitetc” But for the same reason it does not repel other insects as well as the OFF product. i used to use Aeroguard in the boat until i discovered OFF! here in the south east corner of Queensland we get every sub tropical insect known to man or at least it feels that way and the OFF product seems to work far better then the Aeroguard. I can put up with flies but not Mossies, Sand flies etc etc etc

@RCModelReviews Nice looking intro, but I think 10 seconds would be better. You could still fit 2-3 sponsorship logos in 10 secs with a bit of fluff at either end.

Here in Brazil we use to buy the OFF of J&J brand. It is efective against mosquitos but not for “borrachudos”, a little blackfly wich can cause skin irritation quite unconfortable. I’ll look at Aerogard but am not sure to find it here.
Thanks.
And by the way, keep the intro. The user can skip it anytime if don’t like.

In Canada we use Muskol which is water based and contains 30% deet.
One of it’s features is that it will melt your cell phone case which is handy for personalising it with your finger prints.
It works well though

Watching the video, I thought I would react on 2 things: the 30 sec. intro, and the hairy arms. But both have been taking care off already…

Hi Bruce. I fly quite often at Nelson Lakes when we’re on holiday there and the sand flies are a real pain for RC and FPV. So far, I’ve used Aeroguard with limited success. It’s better that nothing but any bare square centimeter the little blighters can find is soon targeted. I have a theory that the local sand flies recognise the smell of repellent and say to themselves “Ah! fresh blood somewhere upwind. Dinner time!” I think the only effective solution may be a full-body dive outfit!

Hi Bruce. Don’t throw “OFF” away! You could make a fly trap and use it as a bait…

In all fairness Off was developed for the US army for the terrible mosquitos in Vietnam … not sure if it claims to repel flies?

Aeroguard makes a good paint stripper, i’ve seen it clean up graffitti. Ever since then i don’t like putting it on my skin.

I was thinking the same as Cracker…wow lol…arms like a goat heheh. Great stuff. Yes the best products must have deet in them . The very best is Muskol Classic Liquid 40 ml. bottle. I have used that in swarms of mosquitos thousands of them so thick they would fly in your mouth. We ate them in our food when cooking them too. Up here in Canada they get real bad. early June is black fly season too. They will chew a small hole anywhere on your exposed skin and just get a straw out , heheh ,
