The bugs that everyone calls “mosquito eaters” or mosquito hawks”- do they really eat mosquitoes ?

I have never seen one eating or even chasing a mostquito. My personal opinion is that parents calls them that so their kids dont freak out when they divebomb their heads- and they do! lol

The insect that I’ve always heard referred to as a “mosquito eater” is, in fact, a Crane Fly. Check out these pictures to see if they’re the same bug you’re thinking of:

Toxorhynchites never drink blood. This family includes the largest of the extant mosquitoes (colloquially referred to as “mosquito eaters”) and their larvae are predatory on the larvae of other mosquitoes. Attempts have been made in the past to use these as mosquito control agents but with variable success.
Also called Crane flies are the insects that are traditionally called Mosquito eaters, they do not eat (or bite) anything after becoming adults because they lack functional mouthparts.

Mosquito hawk is another name given to dragonflies and crane flies.
Crane flies DO NOT eat mosquito’s but Dragonflies DO eat them.
