Well, firstly, contact your bank by phone or in person and clarify the situation. It should be the man who is trouble for presenting a dud cheque to you, not you in trouble for banking it. You’ll probably find that this will be the case, and the notification is to help you.
Secondly, notify the police. The man has perpetrated an act of fraud.
Thirdly, never EVER take a cheque without the back-up of a banker’s cheque gaurantee card. Write the number on the back of the cheque yourself, verify the signature, take the issue number, check the sort code, and that the cheque card is valid – in date. Also, that the amount on the cheque doesn’t exceed the limit on the card.
Make it a policy; no cheque guarantee card means cash only please.
