What’s a good summer vacation spot (with a beach)?

My boyfriend and I are going on vacation from July 17th through July 26th and are looking for a cool place to go on vacation. The pre-requisites are as follows:
1. It must have a beach/sun/warm weather
2. There needs to be a lot going on (nightlife/daytime activities/etc.)
3. It must be relatively inexpensive (no more than $600 per person total (including EVERYTHING – food, lodging, etc))
We are traveling from Boston. Our ideas have ranged from VA Beach to FL to Mexico. If we went anywhere between here and VA Beach we would drive, so we would need to worry about lodging and gas. VA Beach hotels on the ocean front along Atlantic Ave are expensive. We don’t want to stay in Norfolk – if we did VA Beach, we want to be on the strip.
If we went anywhere else we would fly. Mexico is pretty cheap, and there is definitely stuff going on down there, but I know its also kind of a dangerous time to be crossing the border. (That and my boyfriend hasn’t gotten his passport yet…I’m not sure he’d have time).
We’ve been to FL a couple times, but we’ve definitely enjoyed it, so obviously its an option.
I think we’ve just run out of ideas! If you guys have any experience or ideas that you can share it would be GREATLY appreciated!

If BF doesn’t have passport, you won’t be able to go to Mexico…which is dangerous right now anyway…..
Check out Biloxi, Mississippi….It’s on the gulf, relatively cheap, and plenty of nightlife….

Would you consider a cruise? There are some great deals available. I think there are a few that leave from Boston, also Florida and the Carolinas. I have seen some that start as low as $299 each for an interior room. (cabin and meals) From Florida West coast they go to Cozumel and Grand Cayman or East coast Bahamas St. Thomas etc. Carnival and NCL seem to have the best prices, younger people on-board and more activities.
