Why do some mosquito bites get much more swollen and painful than others?

I got a mosquito bite yesterday, and it is now swolen to maybe a 2×2 inch area and the skin is very hard. It also stays depressed for a long time when I press my nail into it. It’s a little painful and very itchy. How come some mosquito bites (and I know it’s a mosquito because I saw it bite me) become so painful and large, and other ones are just small bumps that itch with no pain?

I guess it just depends on how long they are biting you and what type of mosquito it is. I am like a mosquito magnet and every time I go in my yard at dusk, I will come back with over 10 bites. Some of mine get really large and red. I once heard that you can put nail polish on it to stop the itching. I never tried this, but it might work.
If it is still bad by tomorrow or so, you might want to see a doctor to make sure it’s not infected. Or it could be the dreaded West Nile Virus.
My self and experience with animals dealing with ticks and mosquitos.

Well one stop scratching the damn thing, you are making it worse!!! If it is is hot to touch and swollen pretty bad then you probably have Cellulitis, an infection in the subcutaneous layer of the skin. You probably have not been cleaning the area very well or you have dirty finger nails because bacteria has gotten into it. The best way to treat Cellulitis is to get seen and ask for these Meds. Rifampin and Septra DS. They work real quick, but they will make your pee look neon orange and Septra will make your skin sensitive to light.
Im a US Navy Hospital Corpsman working at MCRD Parris Island. This happens to my Recruits that I treat. I see this sh*t alot.
