Dog shampoo itchy dry skin ?
I have a 9yr old pitbull with skin allergies, it was never determined what her allergy was, but it has been being controlled by daily Benadryl per the vet, but she still can get itchy and now being winter her skin is very dry, I’ve been using Hypo allergenic Oatmeal shampoo on her and Resincort lotion on her after but she’s still very dry, and I just adopted a corgi who is also very itchy! Not as dry but I did notice even when I saw him at the shelter he was itchy (no fleas or mites) and he’s been licking his paws alot (Im going to assume he has some sort of allergy too!!! He has a vet appointment on tuesday) The oatmeal shampoo doesn’t seem to be working any miracles on him either, I actually work at the vet in the grooming department, and theres three medicated shampoo’s that im looking at to get for the two of them, and was just wondering on other peoples opinion’s on which shampoo out of the three would be the best for the itchy’s and dry skin, There’s Dermal-Soothe, Relief, and Epi Soothe, any opinions?

You might be shampooing your dogs too much. The vet should be able to give you pills or an injection to help to stop your dogs from scratching so much.

Do you think changing the dog’s diets would help? My Pomeranian was itching all the time and I tried several different shampoo’s and found that by changing her brand of dog food did the trick. Good luck, that itching has to be making everyone crazy!

I found relief through change of diet is the most effective. Take a look at the ingredients in your dog food, wheat, corn, soy are the biggest problem causers. Your dog can also become allergic to the source of protein. To remedy this you give a source of protein the dog has not been exposed to like if you have been feeding a chicken based food, switch to a lamb. I feed a grainless food Taste of the Wild, Wetlands formula (about $42.00 for 30 pounds) and all the allergies (and recurring ear infections) disappeared within 3 weeks although it may take longer. I also supplement with Omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oil which is a natural anti-inflammatory. I also heard evening primrose helped soothe irritated skin, but since the fish oil and change of diet helped I never tried it.

I would try a heavy moisturizing shampoo. Being a groomer I am sure you are probably familiar with most of them. Another suggestion is try a good dandruff shampoo or black tar shampoo (I think you have to ask the pharmacist for that), it is great for skin problems.
You might need to start getting cortisone shots. It doesn’t sound like the benedryl is working. Also cut down on bathing so frequently. Give the natural oils of your dogs skin take effect. If you bathe them too often you are washing away their own natural oils before they have a chance to moisturize their skin.
You can also try vitamin E which is frequently used to help bring moisture into the skin.
Good luck and lol.

I have had a skin problem dog in the past and tried several different shampoos. The one I liked the best and so did my dog’s skin, was Epi-Soothe. I also talked to a lot of dog trainers, breeders, and groomers. General consensus was to lubricate from the inside as well as treating with shampoo. In other words, add a teaspoon or two of olive oil or vegetable oil to your dogs food; regulate the amount depending on dog’s size and watch bowel movements for possible diarrhea. I also give peanut butter treats when training Franklin loves them and they are good for his skin. Good luck!
