Could someone advise me on flea control for a 14 year old kitty. We moved to Florida and I have an indoor cat
He does go out on the screened lanai. I just noticed him scratching, and checked him and saw a flea. Like a dummy, I treated him with Zodiac spot on, but I only used half the amount on Saturday, because I was worried about his reaction. I gave him the rest of it on Tuesday. I had second thoughts and washed it off him, (I read some stories on the internet!) Well, he still has some fleas, so today I gave him a nice bath with gentle detergent. He was such a good boy, and now the remaining fleas are dropping off, and I am combing him with a flea comb (he’s purring) he must know I’m trying to help. I would like to put Advantage on him and wonder if that would be OK. I plan to call the vet in the morning, but am hoping for some advice from other cat owners. We have been treating the condo with flea spray, but keeping him out of those rooms while they are being treated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I use frontline on my cat and she is 13 years old. It is always best to check with a vet first. I am sure he will tell you its ok. If you have fleas in your home or notice them on the lanai, sprinkle some sevens dust and then sweep up. You can get it in the lawn and garden center of most stores. It is safe for your pet my dad uses it on his dogs. It also really works. Good luck with your kitty.

always buy the oldest brand if your worried if you are that concerned then use flea control in the house and cat or baby shampoo on the cat but some flea control doesn’t get rid of the eggs so check the container

The BEST thing you can do is call the 1-800 on the Advantage package, as well as on the Zodiac package, and check with them regarding reactions and time frames for reapplication. They may advise you to wait 2 wks or so. Make sure you tell them that half the dose was NOT washed off.
Advantage has a history of causing more reactions than say, Frontline Plus. Promeris is also rather high on the list. Vectra 3D is brand new to the US, and seems to be doing well. Frontline Plus is old as dirt, and has maintained efficacy, and seems to be the least likely to cause reaction.
Reactions to flea products generally involve hair loss, although they can cause lethargy and vomiting, very, very few pets tend to have reactions, even to the products on the “more-likely” list. With products purchased from your vet, you’re much less likely to see a fatal reaction.
