cat issues: fleas and hair?

Fleas
i have 3 cats. my 2 girls go outside on occasion and my male cat stays outside most of the time, only coming in for food. now that spring is here fleas are going to be coming out so what is the best solution on fleas control for cats that are both in door and out door? and my other issue is my male cat is a long haired cat. his fur is balling up in knots. there are too many to brush out. would it be ok if i shaved him? if and when i get the knots out is there anything i can do, other than brushing him to keep his fur from getting knotted up?

for the fleas, get some of that stuff that you put on between their shoulder blades. advantage i think it’s called. as far as your knotty kitty, maybe cut out the snags but don’t shave him. he’ll be embarassed.

Frontline Plus or Advantage for the fleas is the only way to go. It needs to used monthly to be effective.
You need to brush your long-haired cat; he needs to keep his long coat and its protective guard hairs but if he won’t allow you to brush his belly (many won’t), a trim by a groomer or vet is a good idea to prevent mats.

I strongly urge you to keep Frontline, or Advantage or a similar flea control on your ALL of your cats at ALL times. Make sure you do this every month and also a good flea collar (call your vet for recommendations). I personally see no way of truly avoiding fleas altogether if your cats are both indoor/outdoor cats.
If your long-haired cat has that many knots then you seriously need to remove them at once.
Knots, left unattended will cause large sores and scabs under your cat’s fur as they dig at them. To get the knots out of your cat will be time-consuming but it must be done. If you can’t afford a groomer, then get a pair of embroidery scissors or manicure scissors, have your cat’s brush close at hand and start snipping away each knot then brushing each knot as it is removed. Work slowly and GENTLY!
You may find it easier to start snipping the knots from the outer part of the knot moving in closer to the skin. Just be sure to BRUSH these knots as you trim away. I would not shave my cat! If this must be done then please please take the cat to a vet because if the knots are that plentiful chances are good there will be more problems than you will be able to contend with. Shaving cats should be done only as a last resort and by qualified professionals!
PLEASE take the time to brush your cat’s daily. This is as much for health reasons as it is cosmetic.

I have 3 cats & they all are indoor cats, but I also have 2 dogs. And when the fleas start watch out 1 flea will lead to thousands of fleas & quick. And they can stay doormant for upto 2 yrs.I use revolution I have tried the others but revolution kills fleas and the larvae prevents heart worm, ticks & kills ear mites. The store bought flea meds.are junk they don;t work & it has been known to kill animals. As far as your long haired cat if you can;t get the knots out by brushing him get some good scissors & cut them out & then brush him.If you let the knots go they will just get worse.I know it happened to my cat. After you get the knots out keep him brushed so it will not happen again. If the knots are down to the skin & real bad you might want a groomer to do it so he doesn’t get cut.Because they like to squirm when you groom them. You could have him shaved down &his hair will grow out new & beautiful if you do go that route he will probally be embarrased because all of that hair is gone & he will not like it.I would only do that if his knots are real bad.GOOD-LUCK!

The best NATURAL remedy is to use Lemon Joy dish soap. It will kill the fleas on contact. No need for flee collars, they don’t work that well anyway. We have done this and it WORKS.
