advice on what to take on carry-on?
I’m leaving to Russia in 2 days & while reading tips on what to take on carry-on, people are saying that theyre taking hair straighteners & curlers & cellphone chargers, but why? Why would you need those things on the plane if you could just keep them in your checked luggage?
I plan on taking my own pillow, blanket, a deck of cards, ipod, a few books, a few magazines, my camera, chapstick, some food & candy & gum, painkillers, & my glasses/case & contact case/eyedrops/cleaning solution.
Is this enough? Is it alright? It seems like I dont need to take so much- just things to entertain me. Sorry if the question seems stupid, but i was just confused why people were taking things such as hair curlers & tweezers & mosquito repellent on the plane if they obviously dont need it there-if they could just keep it in their luggage.

A quick check with the airline you are flying on will give that information, just google the airline.
One other thing to check before packing, make sure before taking any appliance, or chargers, that Russian power source is the same as ours, that is, 115 to 120vac @ 60 cycle, I don’t believe Russia has the same current specifications as ours. that is the 60 cycle part, as they are not interchangeable.
And by no means should this be considered a stupid question.

I recommend leaving your straightener, curler, etc. in your checked baggage. You don’t have a lot of room on the plane and you want to take as little as possible on board with you.
Depending on the airline, they may provide you with a blanket and pillow…check the website to see what they do provide and what they don’t.

They are just vain. You have the right idea…
Your own pillow and blanket so you don´t get someone else´s lice. The cards, ipod, maybe one book and two magazines, so you don´t get bored. A camera so you don´t miss any memorable momments. And everything elso you mentioned for your own comfort.

Some things to consider to take in your carry on is anything valuable or that can be damaged in checked luggage. Having said that, there is nothing that you mention other people carrying that I fit into these categories. At best, they might be expensive and should be packed with care. Like not in the top of the suitcase where if opened someone sees it right away.
But any medicine, identification, money, travel itineraries should be in your carry on.

People, such as me, take things in their carry on that they cannot use on the plane for the following reason: They need these things or they would be difficult or expensive to replace IF the airline loses your luggage! We are not vain! I take the 3.4 oz or less of shampoo, conditioner and lotion and at least one days change of clothes.

What’s up with people? To some people who answered this question- you must not travel a lot!!
Your question is not stupid. You are right- the less you bring, the better. The idea is, don’t put anything valuable or essential in your checked baggage. Why? It’s simple!! YOU ARE TRAVELING HALFWAY ACROSS THE GLOBE! You’d be awfully upset if your luggage got lost, not to mention, inconvenienced. Mine got lost last week from Boston to Miami, and I didn’t get it back for 5 days. The only thing I had with me was my laptop (charger was in checked baggage, along with my cell phone charger), and purse with ipod (charger in checked baggage). I had no clothes. I had no makeup. I also didn’t have my prescriptions. All that was in my checked baggage. My phone and laptop were of little use to me without chargers, so I ended up having to buy new ones. also in my checked bag was my brand-new Chi Rocket hair dryer, which retails for over $250. I never thought to bring it with me in my carry-on baggage, but I might think about it in the future. The airlines take no responsibility for anything ther lose, that’s damaged, or stolen. They might send you compensation for a bag that was lost several months ago, but what good does that do you when you are thousands of miles away from home, and have to buy stuff new? It’s not about vanity, it’s about living with your daily essentials. I could see doing without my hair dryer or staightener for a few days, but if I can avoid losing it, why wouldn’t I take the appropriate steps?
Thousands of people travel every single day. Thousands of bags are lost every single day. Just think about what the essentials would be in the event your bag did get lost.

I’m flying to Europe in a few months and I’m taking most of what you said you’re carrying on, but also a change of clothes, an extra pair of underwear, my make up, laptop/cell phone chargers, 3 ounces of shampoo and conditioner……just because I dont want to be stuck in a place I’ve never been without my luggage in case they’ve lost it. Yeah, it’s a lot to carry on, but I’d rather it be with me than me without it. Everyone has their own opinions; some people trust the airlines and have had good experiences and some people have had bad experiences. I say it’s all in what you feel comfortable having on the plane with you and what you feel comfortable letting them handle. Good luck and have fun in Russia!
